Just checked the battery voltage on the optima battery.. 12.1, guess I'll put it back on the battery tender, could the low battery have something to do with it?
Most common cause of column lock symptoms is a weak or bad battery or loose or corroded battery cable connections including at the starter solenoid........
Once your battery is fully charged check to see if the column locks with NO KEY in the ignition.
If it locks then I would suggest that you consider installing an LMC5 before you get stranded by either a locked column when you don't want it locked or the 2mph fuel shutoff that results on manual trans cars that have had the GM Column Lock Recall Service performed. Google " Compliance Parts " if you are not familiar with the LMC5....
It's never locked with the key out since I've owned it
Most common cause of the Column Lock symptoms is a weak or bad battery or loose or corroded battery cables including the one at the starter solenoid. You need to start with insuring the battery is good. Measure the voltage across the battery posts using a digital multi meter with the NEG battery cable disconnected. DO NOT read the voltage on the dash gauges. They report the stats of the charging system and NOT the status of the battery........ . A good battery at full charge will measure 12.7 to 12.9 volts or more. The car will start with 12.0 volts or less. However the C5 electronics are NOT going to be happy with voltage of 12.5 or less. If you start the car with low voltage the electronics, especially the column lock electronics is going to fail. The low battery voltage typically fries the GM K Harness that should have been installed on your automatic trans car.
If that has happened you are not going to be able to drive the car until you install an LMC5...
Since your car apparently has the 2mph fuel shutoff (part of the GM recall service that was only intended for manual trans cars) you are going to need to get and install an LMC5 to prevent getting stranded by a future column lock failure.
Google "Compliance Parts" and read about and then order the LMC5. Save the install instructions just in case the car begins to exhibit the "Pull key...." message. If that happens you will want to do the optional "brown wire mod" detailed on the 2nd page of the install instructions....
Good advice. I am more than likely trading the car on Saturday. The battery is brand new; just bought it New Years Day. I may need to advise the future owner of this and let him know what happened. Never had it do this before in the three years I've had it. I have to drive about three hours to meet him this weekend, hopefully it won't make an issue on the way. The car restarted both times no problem, and seems to drive fine.
