Default Need advice on performance upgrades for the c5 models

Hello EVERYONE!!!

Great site love it here very knowledgeable members I appreciate the assistance I have received from everyone

So I am looking to buy a c5 corvette and have a max budget of $12,000 and I have found some very nice clean models with around 90,000 miles and I am knowledgeable about the 1997-2001 models and features...

I am going to buy a 1997-2001 coupe, convertible, or Frc ((really want a Z06 and will try hard but at $12,000 very hard to find for that price)

MY QUETION IS:

Has anyone bought a stock 1997-2001 convertible, coupe, or frc and added a cold air intake, upgraded the throttle body, or installed a headers or exhaust mufflers and if you did can you tell me if it makes a BIG performance difference and does the car feel MUCH faster with these simple bolt on mods? Just wondering if you felt a NOTICEABLE power difference once you installed and drove for the first time after install...

How much hp gain is the following:

Cold air intake?

Throttle body?

Headers and x pipe?

Just performance mufflers without headers?

Just want to know if you had a stock vette and once you installed if you felt WOW this simple bolt on made a BIG power difference on your first test drive with the new performance part...also did anyone dyno after each mod to see added hp numbers

Looking to hear if you did one of these parts listed above and your diving experience after and hp numbers

LOOKING TO HEAR GREAT ADVICE FROM EVERYONE THIS SITE IS AWESOME AND I REALLY AM INTERESTED TO HEAR YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

I have a 99 6 speed coupe, I have added Vararam CAI / LS 6 intake / headers with X pipe and high flow cats / a mail order tune from ECS (http://www.eastcoastsupercharging.com/) and most definitely can feel it !!!!!

Also can anyone tell me if you need to have the car tuned for each modification to optimize performance?

Is the corvette tuneable or do you need an aftermarket programmer to do this?

Do those mods make the car faster? Absolutely. You'll definitely feel it in the seat of your pants, but it won't be night and day. Heads/cam make the biggest difference until you get into forced induction.

Intake: ~3-5 hp.

Throttle body: ~2 hp. Don't bother replacing this unless you're getting into HEAVY mods.

Headers and x-pipe: ~ 20 hp.

Exhaust system/muffler: ~5 hp.

A tune would definitely be recommended for this setup, especially with the headers. You could pick up another 10-15 hp from the tune, and the car would drive and idle much more smoothly as well.

01 6 speed - base dyno = 291rwhp/313tq added vararam, XSPower headers, magnaflow catback (just for sound) and a tune = 331 rwhp/344tq
Seat of the pants meter felt the difference.

Another great mod was replacing the stock shifter with an MGW

However; addicting, so now I went A&A V3 ysi

Oh by the way, and no disrespect to current owners, but go 2001 and up - more factory improvements and certain repairable computer parts...

The Corvette Museum website used to have good write-ups on every year, I see they changed the site and now only list 2002..hmmm, really liked that feature...anyway here's an old link I found that offers some comparison:

I have a '97, 6 speed coupe, which I purchased almost a year ago with 78,000 miles for around 12K. The car I bought was clean, just needed some overdue maintenance and some new interior pieces. Having spent the last 10 months working on fixing various items, I would say don't overlook the small easy stuff first.

Replacing:
spark plugs/wires
fuel filter
fuel pump/sock assembly
all o2 sensors

Cleaning:
MAF/intake/throttle body
Radiator

really made a night and day difference for me in terms of performance, idling, and pedal response. It felt like a whole new car after I completed this work. I'm not saying these will add HP, but for me it made a world of difference.

The only "performance" item I have currently added is the Vararam CAI. I did not get a tune after installing the CAI, and I can still feel a very noticeable difference.

I noticed a difference by adding an Airaid filter and Flowmaster axleback exhaust. I purchased my XS power headers with xpipe and high flow cats and will be installing that in the spring time then getting it dyno tuned. Hoping for 330/340 rwhp and torque.

Depends on a lot of things. Which setup you go with, what other mods you've done, etc. I would guess that if you threw a new heads/cam combo in an otherwise stock car, you'd pick up in the range of 60-80 horsepower.

What I would do is that the money that is supposed to go towards mods, I'd add that money to my max budget and either get a 2002+ or try to get a Z06 out right from the start.
