I am looking at a 2004 Corvette with 19,000 miles on it. I am in the process of making a deal. The question I have is the 2004 Corvette gas tank problems that can cost over 2K to repair. Anyone have any info on this, the serial numbers of the car are in the range of the gas tank issue. Is this something that WILL happen or MIGHT happen ? I have researched this topic and read different opinions.
I know GM extended the warranty, but only for 10 yrs.
It could be a problem, the risk increases with age. I avoided the VIN range when searching and purchasing mine. I figured why pay for a problem then worry about whether it will jump up and bite you?
The problem was prone to occur on Vettes within a certain VIN range within the 2004 model year, so your 2003 is as safe as it can be. Doesn't mean it could never happen, but it's not prone to.
OP, If you want to test the car, simply fill it up, but don't top off the tank. When the pump clicks off, take the nozzle out. When you start it up, if there is a very strong smell of gasoline that doesn't dissipate after 5 or 10 miles, it may have the problem. The best way to tell is, after filling it up, put it up on a lift, you'll see the wetness near the gas tank(s).
BTW, this problem can occur with any C5 or C6 (not sure about the C7). A while back I did some research on this gas tank issue and found several instances where C6s had the problem. The group of 04 C5s referenced are more prone to having the problem.
I'm in there. 58k miles. race it every other weekend. no issues, no concern that there will be an issue. I've got larger things in life to stress out over than the possibility that something old might act old.
This is nothing. It's an automobile that is over 10 years old. Age happens. Things wear out. We fix them and move on. This is no different.
