It seems like all the C5 Z06's are in Texas or California for sale....I did find a 2003 Yellow with 47k miles on it. I think $22k will do it, I haven't seen it up close, but if it's mint is that a reasonable price to pay ? And should I change the valve springs on a 2003 ?

Thanks as always,

Its all about the miles and condition to determine cost/value. $22k is fair if the vehicle is very clean with under 50k miles. When you get around 60K miles, under $20k should be the price, I see 20K mile C5 Z's going for over $25k price around here.

22K is about in line.
Depends upon what color valve springs are in it, yellow or blue.
Search for Valve Spring failures for how to check.
I'd say around that's a good price, and it depends because mid year 2003 is when GM changed the springs on these cars. Depending on build date, they may or may not need done.

Is that ZR-1 in your user name a C4? My brother has a gorgeous 91 Z! The 01s and 04s have a drastically reduced possibility of having a valve spring failure...it's probably more along the lines of the probability of any engine having a valve spring failure.
Basically, in 2001 GM released the LS6 with 385hp. They put a higher lift cam in the 2002 to get the 405hp. They never changed the valve springs to compensate for the more aggressive cam, until mid 2003. So 2002 cars all have improper valve springs, and the majority of 2003s also have faulty valve springs. The problem was rectified by the factory by the time the 2004s rolled off the assembly line.
BTW, not sure how far Bedford, Mass is from NJ but I have a mint 2004 Z06 if you're interested in taking a look.
Depends on the Vin. A little under half of the 2003's had the issue. If they aren't the yellow ones, change them out asap. That is a gamble I wouldn't be willing to play.

When I lived in SoCal I found the Z I was looking for way up in the top of Montana. '04Z with 17K, spent almost a month trading emails with the seller, flew up there and had an incredible two day drive home. I used CraigsList and worked out further and further from SoCal....I've bought 3 cars out of state and all have been great...

Ha I'm from Montana! As an aside, some of your posts that I read while looking for my car last summer convinced me to take the plunge and buy a car from out of state. A couple states away with a 1 way ticket in hand and I couldn't be happier!
There used to be some info posted on here somewhere about the build dates of the 03's with said potential issue. I had come across it long ago just browsing through the forum. Try searching to find it.

From the research I have done on here it's the YELLOW ones that have the high failure rate. They changed part way through the 2003 MY. Later 2003's and 2004 have I think blue or black springs (can't remember).

Didn't they come out with a remake of the yellow?? Or did they change the color?
My apologies OP, I was aware the original yellow springs had quite a few failure rates,. I thought GM went back with the same color for the redesigned version. They did not. They are blue. Check this out.
