Default Vortex rammer

Has anyone come up with a clever idea to protect the vortex from injesting water when you have to drive in the rain?

Ok Vortex owners how about this? I don't have one but tell me if this is possible. Instead of attaching the box lid with screws use velcro to line the outside of the box to attach to the rad shroud. So when you have to go into heavy rain you can just pull off the box lid and put the cut out sqaure back into the cut out using the same velcro approach. Thus making it a top breather temporarily. Doesn't seem like a hard thing to do. Will that work?

Had a Vortex on my Y2K FRC for two years, and now have one on my 02 Z06 and have never had a problem with injesting water. Suppose if you drove through a flood it would be a different story, but have gone thru a number of southeastern downpours problem free. Just an fyi.

What about the install suggestion mentioned up top? Will it work?

Before getting the S/C package with the Donaldson Blackwing, I had a Vortex Rammer. Drove with it for nearly a year without a single issue -
rain or shine.

I personally wouldn't loose any sleep over it - normal conditions (i.e. normal rain) does not pose any threat to a Vortex equipped Vette. If you find yourself caught in one of those hellacious rainstorms where it is raining so hard that the wipers can't clear it fast enough to see well and there's LOTS of standing water on the road, then I'd simply pull over and wait it out.

The horror stories you hear about water ingestion are mainly from folks attempting to plow through standing water that's more than a a couple inches deep. (And I wouldn't recommend that even with a stock setup!)

The whole water ingestion thing with the Vortex has been blown way out of porportion IMHO. It's just not an issue - use common sense and don't attempt any river crossings... :D

I suppose it would work, but as you can see, no one has put much thought in it.

I have a Vortex and it is fairly high, compared to others. If water gets that high, I think the computer which is under the battery will be under water. I would not try to ford any rivers or streams in my vette anway.

Last weekend on the way to Carlisle, I drove through a really heavy downpour. I didn't feel safe at 45 mph because of standing water in the ruts made by the big trucks. The car was hydroplaning. No problem with the Vortex.

I had eactly the same conditions on the way to Carlisle with my z06 w/Vortex not air prob;ems just the squishy road conditions. A better question might be since the Vortex gets more direct water spray does the oil on the filter cone need to be refreshed more often?

Steve/Panzer...since you two are local. Is the rammer worth it? Did you add just the cold air system, or the rammer and whole 9 yards? Just curious.

You seem to be very concerned over this. Your best bet would probably be to stick a K&N in the stock box and get one of those stock-type airbox lids from Mid America that have been opened up a bunch. I think Mid America sells the modified box lid and the K&N as a package for about $130. You may also want to consider the Blackwing. You are not going to see a huge performance difference between the various airboxes so you might want to consider these two options.

I agree with Ross. If you are that worried, maybe a different alternative might be right for you.

I ran a Vortex on my 2000 for 2 1/2 years without any incident whatsoever. Just clean the element regularly and you are good.

Rain won't hurt the car with a Vortex. DEEP, flood-like puddles might, but rain and most puddles will not cause a problem.
