With the help of this forum I installed the LMC5 including the extra brown wire even though I had not experienced any problems. Everything has been fine for a couple months but today I am getting the "Service Column Lock" message on start up.
Has anyone experienced this after installing the LMC5?
The only possible explanation I can see is that I had the car at a body shop for some minor front bumper work for a few days. When i picked the car up today the car was running and the supervisor said they had just pulled it out for me when I came in so they didn't turn it off. When I got in to leave is when I noticed the message on the DIC. Now I am wondering if maybe they had run down the battery and were letting it run to recharge.
Would that cause the message to come on even though the LMC5 is installed? The message still appears after driving home 12 miles so the battery should now be charged.

the brown wire should have fixed that, I would call //http://www.complianceparts.com/lmc5whoneeds1.html
Any update on this problem that might help other that encounter the same symptoms????
Nothing yet. When I get the time I want to disconnect the battery for while and double check the LMC5 to make sure the wires are all still in place. If that all checks out I'll contact Richard as suggested. It will be a few days but I'll post when I have any new information.

Call Richard....I initially got the message, after the install...first told me to pull the relay, then do the brown wire mod. All is well now after a year.
Hi all.. got one of these to fit as I have a 99... what is the brown wire? there doesn't seem to be one on the one I have got.. is there another version?
When did you get the LMC5 that you have??? If it is more than a year old it may NOT have the brown wire. Over the few years the LMC5 has been around it has evolved from just 1 to 2 and then to 3 versions and is now back to just 1 version that has the best of all the prior versions.
If you have the one with a brown wire then the 2nd page of the instructions talks about an optional configuration that is used if you install the LMC5 and then start seeing "Pull key...." messages when you start the car. The optional configuration corrects for that condition.
Hi 8vette ,
I got it to be fair within the last year, to be honest not 100% sure where from now!!
the plug has a Red, White, green and black wire... all instructions are on one sheet... at the end it says
IF a 'service column lock' or 'Pull key' message error is displayed it says to disconnect the BCM and leave for 7 hours and completely discharge ..
if you have an old key replace it!!!
to be fair for what these cost I would rather get another one, if one is available as you have to pull the dashboard apart etc!!

I disconnected the battery for a while and after that the message is gone. Looks like the computer needed to be reset. Hopefully I have seen last of the "Service Column Lock" message.
I would contact Richard at Compliance Parts and see what he can do for you.
Go to the link in post #3 above for contact info..
If you have an LMC5 you do NOT have to pull apart the dash board. It installs in the passenger footwell right at the BCM.
If you have a Column Lock Bypass (CLB) you do have to do some disassembly of the drivers side knee bolster.
Just curious, but I recently bought an 03 6 speed and the column locks after I shut the car off and remove the key. How can I tell if a CLB has been installed by a previous owner or by GM?
The steering column on my previous 01 coupe, which I bought used, did not lock upon removal of the key.

Remove the drivers knee bolster and look for a little box
Don't wast your time looking for one. If a CLB was installed the column would NOT lock with the key removed from the ignition.
Was your previous 01 an manual or automatic?? Automatic 01 - 04 C5's do not suffer from the column lock symptoms. Their columns do NOT lock with no key in the ignition because the lock ring on the automatics is a small diameter that prevent the lock pin from ever being intercepted so the column will NEVER physically lock. Logically they function exactly like the column lock system on the manual trans but the column cannot physically lock.
OK....now Im confused. I have a 98 automatic. The column does NOT lock so I assume this means the previous owner installed the column thingy. So do I need the other device, or am I good without it??

Yes sir, it was a manual tranny. Looks like I should order an LMC5 for the 03 and do the install for peace of mind. Right? Thx.
