Default Parts No Longer Available!!!!

Okay, a little bit of a rant here!!! I have owned two '99 C5's and both were the epitome of reliable and trouble free cars. We hear so much on here about "Don't buy pre-2001!!!!", etc., etc. Well, I just gave up my last C5 for four wheel drive, and more truly over worry of major component failures that I would not be able to afford on a rural teacher's salary. I bought a 2011 Chevy Silverado LT Z51 4X4 truck and have to admit that I love it and the way it drives and rides!!! I read on a couple of truck forums about a kit to install factory fog lights on trucks that did not come with them originally. As I drive, primarily, lonely two lane state highways and encounter lots of wildlife on the roads, I thought this would be a worthwhile upgrade. Had the pre-painted bumper parts, lights, wiring, switch with the fogs button, etc. But guess what!!! Four years after the truck was produced, they no longer sell this kit!!!!

EBCM, SWPS......I really don't want to hear your whining over a part that has finally been discontinued after 15+ years!!!! I am so spoiled by the for good and forever availability of 'Vette parts that I am having a major coniption fit over not being able to get stuff I want after four years!!!!!!!

Some of the C5 parts were discontinued well before 15 years had passed. But I hear you - it's ridiculous that parts are no longer available after only a few years.

Sucks about the foglights... Make sure you do the DIC mod as well if you don't have it... I love my '09 Silverado.. Put a 7 inch lift on it, 35 inch tires and still drives and rides like a car instead of a typical truck.. Great Platform!

Thanks, man the DIC button upgrade was the very first thing I did and it is awesome!! Came to find out that mine was originally a Canadian sale and even though the gauge faces were in English measure, without the DIC buttons, the odometer was stuck on Kilometers. Now I have temps in Farenheit, pressures in PSI, and all of the things I was used to on my C5's DIC, with the extras of Total Engine Hours and Total Fuel Consumed. Great mod and what got me fueled up for this fog light upgrade!! Have had similar lift and suspension mods like yours years ago and they were very fun, but I can't say that they rode like yours!!! Late model stuff is just so very cool!!!!

Thanks again man,

Although not directly related to Silverados or Corvettes, I agree 100%. Funny how time changes your perspective of things!

Also, my $0.02 worth......I think GM's BK had a lot to do with the discontinuation of parts in a relatively short period of time. HOWEVER, I may be wrong, but I think the Dorman either bought a lot of the factory surplus of parts, and/or the factory tooling. So if an older replacement part isn't available through GM parts channels, check the Dorman catalog.

I agree. I think if our fearless leader with a phone and pen had let GM go through a normal bankruptcy and not the bailout, a lot of GM's parts suppliers would still be in business. Plus I suspect a "new" GM would have been more interested in keeping its customer base and not writing off the pre-bailout vehicles. Rant off.

I also have a 2012 Silverado LTZ. At 45,000 miles the front Diff was making noise. The diff is already obsolete! They tried rebuilding mine and the noise did not go away so they wanted to replace the whole thing.

They finally found a solution and it is nice and quiet. Took them 4 weeks!!

Ya know I was reading the new Summit catalog the other night and noticed that wondering the same thing. Intakes, exh manifolds etc
Keep them in mind for Vette stuff just in case

Feel your pain on pts...ABS module went out on my 02 Silverado many yrs ago being as the VIN said it was canadian made the part was NLAand this was while the truck was still under factory warranty!!

Well....light on the dash is still on lol. To be honest NOT having abs has kept me alive more than once.(thankfully we dont have snow here) Seems the profit in todays cars is in parts not the cars themselves
More and more makes me want to buy much older stuff where any pts store carries stuff.

What Id give to be able to put a T400 trans in mine, eat up 4l60s like candy.

Update:

Contacted Cultrag about the fog light kit and Patrick verified after a little research that it was in fact discontinued. A definite plus and minus result here. I was thrilled to find that they would do the research to find out for me if they could get me the parts, and bummed to find that my original news was confirmed that they were actually no longer available.

Once again, Cultrag, Gene, and Patrick have proven that they are true friends to us and endeavor to get us the best stuff at the best price when at all possible!!!!! Go Cultrag!!!!!!

I have a 2008 Silverado crew cab and did the fog light upgrade several years ago. Found a kit with the right color bumper ends at a dealership in KS. It was the last one. I also did the DIC upgrade and the steering wheel radio control upgrade. All 3 were plug and play. As for C5 parts I always wonder if I should start a bench stock of parts I may need in the future.
