I have my original spoked wagon wheels and was thinking of getting some track day tires for them. They would be used to drive to the track and back. I run Potenza RE760s on the street and my last (first) track day I could feel them getting greasy and squirrely. I'm also looking for "reasonable longevity - I can't afford to get just a few days out of them. I may also put them on when I go to the drag strip.
I ran Nitto NT05's as a dual purpose tire for a little while. My only gripe was that they really weren't that great in the rain. On the street and on the track though I was really impressed (especially on the track) and have been considering using them again for the same reasons you plan to. I think I got decent life out of them for being used at the track for 3 weekends and then daily driven the rest of the time.
I've heard good things about the Toyo R888 but don't have any first hand experience. I would be curious to hear about the Advan A048 to see how folks like that one.
I had NT-05's and really liked them as a beginner on the track. They are as cheap as you will find for a track capable tire. They have really good dry grip and provide a lot of feedback as you approach the limit of traction. They are terrible in the rain, like almost unsafe on the track. They aren't great for the rain on the street but manageable.
Depending on how fast you pick up the sport, you will outgrow these tires. In my second summer of HPDE I was driving beyond what the tires are capable of. Check out the autocross and roadracing section of the forum. There have been a lot of good threads recently on tires for track days. Seems that a lot of folks like the R888's or the NT-01's. These are 100 treadwear versus a 200. They'll have more grip than the NT-05's so they have more space for you to grow into.
There are 200 treadwear tires and then there are great 200tw tires. Bridgestone RE71R, BFG Rival S, and Yokohama AD08R (180 tw) are day and night faster than the NT-05. When I do track days, i would run about 8 minutes of a session, analyze my track inputs then do a final 8 minutes per session. Tires do not get greasy, the three I mentioned are about 3-4 seconds faster per lap than what you have been running, and you learn to run better lines in you lapping. After 30+ years of running tracks, my times on the RE71R's are better than my times 10 years ago on Hoosiers.
none of the tires eligible for that deal will be of any use for you though... what happened to all the other posts?... did someone have to go back and edit their rants and just deleted them all instead??
