I've more recently been buying Pennzoil Platinum (after using Mobil1 for many years) but the key to what oil you should use is whether it meets GM standard GM4718M. If it does, then it's fine to use. If it doesn't, don't use it. Also, I've always used Mobil1 oil filters as I prefer the synthetic fiber element these filters contain.
There are a number of good full synthetic oils that meet the "old" GM4718M standard. The new standard for GM engines using full synthetics is DEXOS-1. Some oil brands will still show GM4718M on the back label along with the DEXOS-1 standard. As long as you use a good-quality 5W-30 full synthetic that has either of those GM standards you will be OK.
For a good filter, WIX, Purolator, NAPA Gold, Mobil-1, and the AC Delco UPF-46 are all great filters. When you go to install the new filter, fill it up first with fresh oil. It takes 2-3 times to fully fill up a filter but when you are ready to start the engine, the filter doesn't have to be filled by the oil pump.
I use whatever name-brand full synthetic oil that meets the GM4718M/Dexos 1 specification and is on sale that particular week. This time around I went with Mobil 1 EP. Last oil change I used Quaker State Ultimate. I do stay away from "boutique" oils such as Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, etc. for the simple reason of price and availability.
Today's synthetic oils are so advanced that you will have a hard time finding a "bad" oil as long as it meets specification requirements.
As far as filters go, I usually use Mobil 1 EP or Fram Ultra Synthetic (not to be confused with the orange economy filter). Both are premium synthetic fiber filters. I've never had any problems with either. Actually, the Fram Ultra is probably the better built filter due to metal mesh reinforcement of the filtering media.
When I called the Mobil 1 hot line, the 800# oil advice line they run, they advised the high mileage formula had the additive package that most closely followed the oil formulas back when the car was new. They said the modern blend oils don't have the anti wear packages needed for some of the cam angles on this engine.
I have also read that Castrol might be good, but haven't run down why it was suggested as a Mobil 1 replacement.
Please be aware that a judge ruled that an oil giving the same performance as a synthetic can be labeled and sold as a synthetic , so that is what is in the market today. If it looks like chicken..........
I use only Mobil 1 in the vette. Not because I am an oil expert. Because I have been around enough machinery to know that deviating from operating specifications is only a possible good idea if you have the ability to write your own repair manual. And, since the heat carrying ability of the oil is one of it's job requirements , I don't see how I can find comparable specs to shop around.
The specs on the bottle all cover the same DEXTROS requirement. That's why I called the advice line. PLus I get lonely, and they still take my calls.

Wait, what?!?!? Please tell me you are joking about this?
Just did some googling......... I hate the world a little bit more every day.
I'll be changing my 2000 FRC's oil & filter for the first time soon.
For oil, it's my understanding that Mobile 1 Synthetic 5w30 is the way to go. Just posting a thread in case recommendations have changed over the last 16 yrs.
For filters, any particular brand/type I should go with? (For my S10, I'd usually just run up to my local auto supply store and request a cheap filter.)
Trick is not only a great oil but a filter to match.. NAPA gold is a WIX oil filter that has proved to out perform most filtes.. The OEM PF46 is a good filter
Are the AC Delco UPF44 filters still available? Shortly after I bought my car, back in '01, when Fichtner Chevy was still a CF sponsor, they were selling these filters at a reasonable price, and they were supposedly THE filter to use. I bought a whole bunch of them, but only have a couple left......
Check Amazon. They still have a number of U-series filters for both the LT, and LSx engines. Also try Bill Curlee. Seems to me that I have seen the UPF44 filters advertised in some of his vendor threads.

Yes they are. From my reading, they filter well but are restrictive. Ill be running them on my first three oil changes this go around on my motor and then probably switching to the Boschs after.
Rock auto Has them for the same Price and Cultrag has them for around $20 shipped on Ebay. I chose Amazon since I can have them in my hands in 2 days for like .20 Cents more then Rockauto with the discount.

Hi from the C1 Forum - need to change oil on my LS6
Hope someone might be able to advise.... I've just started up my LS6 after a 9 year sleep. I'm going to go with the 5-30 Mobile 1 and the Delco filter sounds ok - but my engine is out of a 2003 ZO6 - and while I'm pretty sure the dip stick is original, I'm not positive.
SO... With a filter change - do I use 5 quarts or 6? (have the stock
bat wing oil pan)
Thanks

6.5 to 7 quarts, depending on who you talk to.
Read this and then you decide :
I had an 03 and now 01 zo6 they both took 6.5 quarts but when I change the oil I lift the back up about 4 or 5 inches higher then the front and let it drain for about 15 minutes or so
