Base radio question
I am thinking about getting a new radio. In the past I have seen problems with aftermarket radios in a Bose system. Since Bose has their own amps and power will an aftermarket radio give them the right power to hear. Last time it was in my 96 camaro with Bose the aftermarket radio couldn't hear hardly but when I put a Bose radio in it, it worked fine. Anyone know*

The resident expert on car audio is Dennis at Double D Mods in WI. Contact him and I'm sure he can answer all your audio questions.

I doubt there would be any issue running an aftermarket head unit with the factory Bose speakers, provided you connect everything properly. I recently ordered a Kenwood NAV radio (from Dennis) that I plan on using with the stock Bose speakers. The kit comes with a connector that works with either the stock system or aftermarket speakers, depending on your choice.

There is an adaptor that lets you run an aftermarket radio with the stock speakers. Like the others said, contact Dennis. He has the adaptor and plenty of radio choices.

You can look on Crutchfield and find what you need there IF you want to keep your Bose system intact and just replace the head unit.
I found a VERY nice Alpine head unit, adapter, harness and tool kit for less that $250 shipped !
Good luck with your mod.

The 2 most common adapters are:
- Metra XSVI-2004
- Pac Audio ROEM-VET1
Replacing the head unit should be just plug-and-play by using either one. Both have setup adjustments to customize sound/levels. After tweaking them to your liking, they shouldn't require further touching.

A couple of years ago Dennis was able to prewire eveything...Only the power wire had to be run to pass footwell. I would highly recommend his speaker upgrade kit which replaces the rears and upgrades the front tweeters.

Ok, here's an opposite question. What if I wanted to keep the stock Bose head unit (for appearance purposes) and add an amplifier and upgrade all speakers ?
