Default Coolent temps?

Had my 03 Z for about a month now. Tonight when I went out for a spin I lefted the coolent temp gauge on. I noticed that the car was running up to 230 before the temps started to come down. Is that normal? Is seemed pretty high to me and the coolent would run into the 220 to 230 range easy. I was in stop and go traffic. It was about 82 outside air temp. Is this the way the car is designed or should I be concearned?

I don't know if you should be 'concearned' but thats a lot cooler than a lot of the C4's run.

250 in sitting traffic is the norm with BOTH my C4s.

I haven't seen the Z06 get over 200 but it hasn't sat in a prolonged traffic jam with high ambient temperatures, either.

Next time it runs those temps try turning on the AC and see if that helps.
My "Plan B" if the temps are getting on "up there" (> 250) is to just turn off the engine if I'm sitting in a dead traffic jam.

The cooling system seems to be the weak link in Vette design.
Wish they'd design a little more effeciency into the BTU absortion and dissipation system. :mad

I don't think you have anything to be concernededed about, seriously.
It'll cool down when you get some airflow through the radiator.

BTW: If you know HOW to be concernededed, let me know.
Best,

Low speed fans come on at 226, go off at 216.
High speed fans come on at 236, go off at 226

Idleing in traffic you'll see 226-228... then the fans kick in and drop the temps down. You shouldn't see above 230 unless you're road-racing (then you can see 240 easily).

That's how the car is designed.

I believe the car runs hot to help with emissions. However....

I also know my car ran like crap over 190; reach 200 and it just seemed to lay on it's face. I bought a 160 therm and had the fans reprogrammed and it never gets over 185 now (in Houston). Seems to run alot more consistent on the power, even after several minutes of operation.

Thnks guys! Temps just seemed high to me but am relieved that is the way it was designed. It would be nice if I could turn the high speed fan on when I wanted to.
