How does 60 to 70 cents more per gal. equate to 60 to 70 percent more, could someone show me that math?
Is regular $1.00 somewhere?
No idea on your first question.
It's a $1 more for 91 octane than the e10 regular (cheapest) in Traer, Iowa.
I lucked out this past Saturday and found 91 octane at the old amaco station in Belle Plaine, Iowa where it was only 70 cents more than the regular.
93 octane is no where to be found in my area.
I have no choice, mine does not run well on the 87, at all. I still feel like I'm getting ripped off at the pump. In the rural areas it just keeps getting rarer and more expensive. E85 is now more common and an E85 conversion may well be in my future.
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT CONDONING THE USE OF REGULAR IN CORVETTES.
Congrats and good luck with your new old baby! First, use only premium fuel. Second, if you didn't get an owners manual with the car, get one. Third, find a good, honest, recommended corvette shop, book it in for a thorough one end to the other check, have your fluids and filters all changed out so that you have a good baseline to work from. The value of being armed with good information cannot be overestimated. Best wishes to you!
Thank you my friend. I already bought the chevron and am going to use premium. Car is definitely a gem!! You're right, a lot of doom sayers on here..
I think a lot of people interpreted my post as if i wanted to continue using regular.. that's false, i wanted to and am going to switch to premium.
It's not just doom sayers, it's that so many people are SO emotionally invested in these cars. While this definitely has the upside of providing a LOT of terribly in depth knowledge, it also means people can get a lot more worked up about things than they should. It's worth it in the end though, as I don't believe there's a better source for answers to your questions.
Doom and gloom, or factual results.... regular is not the fuel to use daily, as some would suggest... they are they purveyors of the gloom, that is the result of using regular over time. The Topic is ( Is Regular OK ? ) some of us who actually know something about the development of the LSX motor are just answering the topic line. Can you use it in an emergency, sure.. will it blow the motor if used in an emergency? No... The point is, everyday is NOT an emergency ......
I always run regular in both the vettes and never had an issue I even have a tune from a well know tuner and told him I only ran regular , he aid I don't care , runs fine . If you think I neglect my cars , trust me I don't . If I was tracking the car , sure I'll play along and put in high test, other wise nope not even in my lawn tractor.
There are a couple of sayings that come to mind with the topic "Regular gas OK?" (1) Pay me now or pay me later. (2) Penny wise and pound foolish. Loosen the purse strings and do yourself a favor by running your Corvette on premium fuel.

Jim
There was a post that said "if you can do the math" and used those numbers. Thus the $1.00 comment.

Your tuner just took your money and de tuned the car to run on regular, robbing it of about 30/ 40 HP... if that's what you want then that's ok with me... there is really no trusting you because, you have no idea of what took place in the developmentt of this engine... having timing set cause ignition at a lower point in the compression stroke only robs the power stroke of additional horse power, but then if you knew anything about this motor, you would already know that.. The tuner just wants to take your money... and like I always say Trust ????? ha... I say, be careful who you listen too here, just because of guys like you who say " trust me ".
evil twin , I'm sure you change your oil every 5k miles that's fine I ve been a liscenced car tech for over 32 years , but it's all about what you belive and what your comfy with.
Yes your right my tuner took 40 HP from me , but what he did was plenty good for what I wanted.

it's your car but I really don't get that, you can't get 91 or better or you just don't want to pay for it ???? I worked with guys in the Dealership that had many many years in ??? years don't always make you good or knowledgeable ???
I'm happy with the way both my vettes run , I'm not hard on them , I tracked the 04 once again just for fun , ran a top speed of 92 MPH no pinging , just good acceleration, do you really think the dealers put 91 octane in the cars on the lot.

Well it's been some years ago but I worked in a Cadillac Dealership and all they put in their on site fuel tanks was premium !!!!!

"Hi, I'd like to run my car on cheap gas to save money. Can I pay you $200 (enter correct amount) to tune my car this way so I can lose a bunch of HP, but eventually make up for the $ I gave you with gas savings..."
I could understand this I guess if you can't get good fuel where one lives.
All this damn talk about gas and I almost hit the 87 button today, Doh, I caught myself though. Even gave her a drink of Techron. I love my Vette, 170 trouble free fun miles today. Now back to the regularly schedule programing. Mike ;-)
PS A dude in C7 Vert even returned my wave!! Only other Vette I saw on the road today.

You've been a licensed car tech for 32 years and you cant tune your own car????? Ive been an automotive design engineer for 40 years, I don't let anyone touch my car.
I give people here the real truth... not some back peddling... guy here will waste 20 dollars on a throttle body by pas kit ( 5 dollars at home depot ) just because they think they will get an extra 1/4 of a horse power.... Do you think anyone here in their right mind would want tot ake 40 horse power from their CORVETTE, just to save a few bucks???
No doubt you are a poser... "LOOK I drive a corvette" , but I'm so cheap it cant get out of its own way.... 32 yeas as a licensed tech indeed... licensed techs, can take a test ( 1/2 hour and becomes a licensed tech... ) Some of us have multiple 5 year engineering degrees in various automotive related disciplines.
Enjoy your low output corvette.... save a few buck for when you retire... then by a Prius. Put a couple of Corvette badges on it.. " That's the ticket " but don't tell people to trust you, its ok to run regular fuel in an LSX engine.
