I have a 2000 Corvette with piston slap. It stops after approx. 10 minutes when the oil gets up to temp. I heard that GM top end cleaner would stop it for 5-10000 miles. Any advise would be helpful.
My 2002 Silverado w/4.8 L and our 2003 C5 both do it. Silverado has 176,000 on it and still going strong. C5 has about 45,000 on it with no ill effects yet. I've learned to ignore it.
My 2000 with 110,000 miles on the odometer has piston slap for about the first three minutes after cold start. Then it goes away. I bought this car with 89,000 on the odometer and the noise hasn't changed. I'm going to drive it until it hits 200,000 miles or more unless something catastrophic happens, and I don't think anything catastrouphic will happen.
My piston slap never goes away. Hasn't affected performance or economy in any bad way but it makes the car sound cheap
I totally agree, it makes it sound like a POS. It's embarrassing to start it cold in public. I love my car, but this is one thing about it that really bothers me. If I ever sell it, I'm going to have to explain this issue to the buyer and convince them it's a common issue and the engine doesn't need a rebuild. That is, unless, they are a Corvette enthusiast and are already aware.
I tried using 10/40 Mobil 1 and it really made the valve train noise worse on cold startup, esp on cold days. I went back to using 5/30.
I had thought they fixed this issue after 2000, but it doesn't sound like it.
Regardless, I let the engine warm up for a couple mins on cold days and don't hammer on it until it's at full operating temperature. I've got 116K on my 2000 now and I "think" I can still hear a faint sound when the engine is under a load at full operating temperature now. Apparently it's still common, even at operating temperature.
It is what it is. Outside the car, I'm sure all that's heard is my B&B exhaust.
This is common for Chevrolet. I have had Avalanches with this noise and my 2000 has the same issue. Dealer has always told me this is common and annoying but no damage. I am on my third Avy...first two I tool to over $150k each and had no issues. Oil never showed any metal etc.

Well it's good to know from everyone's experiences that you can get high mileage out of these engines despite this issue. I want to get the maximum I can out of mine. Hoping for over 200K. It's a daily driver and I don't hammer on it that often.
I'm also hoping to get to the 200K mark with the automatic tranny. I've replaced the fluid 3 times (not full flushes) and had to replace the shift solenoids a few thousand miles ago because I lost 1st and 4th. When I dropped the tranny pan, the magnet had some black paste that looked like graphite on it. I know that this is ultra fine shavings. Nothing more in the pan than that. I don't think the mechanics before cleaned it, esp from the looks of the pan gasket. It looked like it was the original and never replaced. So, I'm doing it myself from now on. They probably never even dropped the pan and only vacuumed out the fluid they could and then raped me for $200.

so the question is there better replacement parts that can be used to make the engine sound smooth or we stuck with an bad design from a noise standpoint
As others have already said, the piston slap is a common problem with the LS1 engine.
Here's what was posted on the forum a while back on piston slap.
Just read the posters problems describe mine exactly. Doesn't go away when warmed up and is louder underneath. So its not piston slap according to that but what is it? Ive already tried running the motor with all the belts off and the sound still exists.
Well, I don't want to start a BITOG-style oil war, but I will tell you that Mobil 1 0W40 has been aces for my last 2 LS1s. Nice quiet start up, really great cold flow. Excellent oil pressure across the band, and lower oil temps in general.
Just my experience, and I love the stuff. I'm also partial to the K&N oil filters with the big silicone anti-drainback
valve- They're built quite nicely, and have a handy nut on the end.

Jeez, I haven't gotten a handy nut since I was 16 years old.
I also haven't heard any ls1 with piston slap, very curious to hear a video. I was very concerned by it when buying my vette, but none of the Vettes I've ever driven had piston slap issues.
