Default Still searching... 2001?

would you guys recommend staying away from a 2001 z06? Less HP and more potential issues? Just trying to gather all the information I can during my search for the right car.

Thanks!

I would buy any year Z that was well maintained and clean for the right price. Yes the 02+ esp 04 year offered upgrades but that wouldn't stop me from buying a nice 01.

Exactly, get any year 01-04. All come with potential issues. 01 watch for oil comsump. The 20 Hp is not that big of deal and 99% of drivers wont know the difference IMO.

Unless you absolutely must have factory HUD, nothing would shy me away from an '01. I wanted an 02-04 with the exception of if I found a Speedway white '01. Well as luck would have it, I found a white one so I decided to pull the trigger. White was my favorite color, but I was always wondering if I would be upset that I got the "slow" one.

Otherwise completely stock with a bad launch, nothing more than a CAI and an X pipe, and a 12.2 at 117mph told me I was just fine

The car now has long tubes with matching X, with an FTI cam package in the mail as we speak, I will have all the power I was "missing" from an 02-04 car, and in my favorite color to boot.

If the deal you find is on an '01, and the car tells you it's the right one, you will be happy with your purchase, I promise.

Removing the pup cats with headers, adding a c.a.i. ,remove the screen in throttle body, retune and an 01 will go like the rest of the gang. Or better.

Only thing that would deter me from one was the rings/oil consumption issue. Didnt they also have a piston 'slap' issue at startup? Been a while but I thought that was a big issue with owners when they came out.

Very few of the 2001s had oil consumption issues and the odds of finding one that has not been fixed 15 years latter is pretty slim.
I have an early '01 with 83,000 miles on it and the last 2,000 or so are all track miles, no oil consumption issues. I did lift the valve covers and verified that I did have the blue valve springs. The 20 hp difference vs the later models is small and not noticeable during street use.

I don't regret buying my 01. It kept up very well on the bolt on fast list and had a cam a year after I bought it

Stay away is kind of strong words. Now if I found two Z06s that were similar in overall condition and mileage and one was an 01 and the other was 2002-2004, I would opt for the newer one, all things being equal. Why not get the upgrades, the HUD, and 20 more horses?

That being said, nothing wrong with the 01s. They are great cars!

Yea, I would stay away form 01 Zs;
My 140k car has cost me a ton over the past 16 years.
ABS fix $120
Steering position sensor (I think) $60 and three hours of my time.
Replacing the clutch at 125k $600 parts and 10hrs of my time over two days.
and can you believe it's gone thru 80/90 gallons of oil over 16 years (normal oil changes an the odd quart every now and then.)
I also had to fix the climate control unit, two hours of my time, all the repairs I'v had to do, I did my self, what a pain.
Please stay away from O1 Zs, they will nickel and dime you to death, then there is all the time you'll spend driving it...It's all just to much. By the way if you auto-x or HPDE it, tires, brakes will add up too.

Mark

My 2001 just cost me a fortune. SWPS was $60, and had to provide a 6 pack of beer for my brother in law to help me with install. All together thats almost $70 in the past 50k miles...

wait that swps was exactly the same as all 01+ c5's nevermind.

the 20 horsepower extra may even be a bit exaggerated, my 01 kept up just fine with my friend's 02 when stock, and with headers and stock airbox my car made more torque on the same dyno and similar conditions as my other friends headers/CAI car.

That said, if there were two almost identical cars, an 01 or an 02+ then there isn't really a reason to buy the 01. Unless its white, of course

Remember we were the first to see what a great cars the C5Zs were, and still are. At least us that are original owners of 01s.

Then again any C5Z is a great car.

Besides, you can buy new 04Z shocks and other parts at silly low prices anyway. The differences between the cars aren't enough to warrant a huge decision either way.

I have an 01, and it's been perfect besides the issues that plague every C5 on the road eventually... like column lock!
