It does make you wonder what's cooking. The last year of all the gens seems to have had something special. Even the 82 had 'cross-fire injection'. TRIVIA: 82 was the last year you could get an 8-track and CB-radio.
The 04 Z06 may be nothing more than a new color or maybe a little of the C6 technology will leak into it - magnetic suspension and larger displacement seem like possibilities. Or maybe simply a CE coupe/vert with LS6 option.
IMHO, changes to the Z06 will be subtle, even in 2004. Pulling a few more HP from the current Z is not a big deal, but any major change in HP will require significant changes to the drive train. How much faster do yourrealistically expect a stock car to go? There are only a handful of cars in the world that have significantly faster 0-60 or 0-100 times than the Z, and they come with huge price tags.
Knowing GM's history of delaying the introduction of the C5 for years, and that C5 sales, particularly Z06 sales, seem to be strong, I wouldn't bet that the C6 will be introduced in 2004. It should be, as the C5 is getting somewhat long in the tooth, but that doesn't mean much, as long as GM is selling C5's.
Word is.....
2004, C6 intro, NO ZO6 model until '05.............
So, if so........then '04 will be the last Z until '05.........
I figure a 425 version..........and nothing else special.
GM will be content to live without a HI PO model until we are foaming at the chops.........as they will sell WAY enough coupe/Vert C6's to be very worried about the Z..........
IMHO & YMMV :yesnod:
I wouldn't expect anything crazy spectacular. At least not on paper. The last of the C5s will not be allowed to outperform the first of the C6s on paper. That is my guess.
We can't really lose. If the last Z06 isn't a thriller, Chevrolet gets stuck with them,(or prices them more fairly). Anyways, the preformance model, whatever it's called, will be a year or two. Plenty of time. We're the customer.
I guess I'm lost and confused here  If the C6 is coming in '04, why continue on with the Z06? Why not make the new C6 comparable or better than the 03 z06, then about 2 years down the road pop out a new faster C6? This will keep the Z06's high in price, the new C6's up there as well, and stoke up the price for the new high performance C6. Maybe I'm just dumb, but it makes sense to me.
The C6/Z06 is supposed to be (re) introduced (2006) for the 2nd year of the C6. That's what I'm waiting for. I couldn't be happier in the time being with my '01 :yesnod: :yesnod:
Latest poop I've heard is the c6 will come out late 04 and be labled a 05. To avoide skipping a year as in 83 the current c5 will be offered untill the c6 comes out. The initial year of the c6 will not see a Z06. The Z06 will then come out in 2006. With the new body and most importantly more HP!! Granted this is all speculation, but it sounds like something Chevy might do.
