Picked up my Z06 last Sunday at the dealer. On the way home I noticed a clatter coming from the engine as I accelerated, that sounded almost exactly like engine knock when you put low octane fuel in a high compression engine. I assumed the dealer had put a full tank of cheap gas in the car and went about riding around to burn it and get some 93 octane in there. Well, I put a full tank of the good stuff in a completely empty tank and the noise is exactly the same. I remember when I had my Z28 there was some talk on the LT1 forum that injectors made a noise that sounded like pinging from bad gas. Is that what it is?
Thank you a thousand times for your response. Even though I suspected that is what it was, I was starting to get that sick feeling that something might be wrong with it.
My Vette mechanic believes the noise can be eliminated by changing the valvetrain geometry (pushrods / rockers). I've also read posts where aftermarket head/cam setups don't have the unusually loud valvetrain noise the stock ZO6's have. Perhaps an experieced LSx engine builder can chime in here?
While I was at the dealer asking about the noise, I noticed a 2001 ZO6 on another lift, and noticed the engine was torn apart. I asked what happened and I was told there was "some kind of engine problem". I walked over to the bench and picked up a roller lifter and looked at the cam. Roller lifter failer: it was hammered badly, pitted, and deformed and the cam was heavily scored. The car had around 10,000 miles on it (I could not see any evidence of mods (stock airbox, exhaust, etc.)). I am aware of at least one other failure of this kind on a 2002 ZO6 (a forum member). Sorry I did not note which lifter had failed (I believe the scored lobe was near the end of the camshaft). Intuition tells me that all the hammering (resulting in noise) could fatigue the metal on the roller and cam. My car has one lifter that is significantly louder than the others (a buddy pointed this out). The noise comes and goes, though. Putting 2+2 together =
I wish to clarify the info I laid down earlier. The ticking noise that you
hear is the fuel injectors,it sounds like valve train noise up to the point
where the other engine noises drown them out (about 2700 rpm).
There is another noise that began with the '02 (and may be with the
'03) that can be described as a "jingling" noise that originates in the
exhaust system at the crossover pipe.It is heard some on acceleration
and lots on deceleration. This noise sounds very much like "pinging"
that is caused by low octane fuel.
I don't doubt the fella's story about the broken engine,but I wouldn't
worry that it's about to happen with your car.I drove my '01 for 20k
(flogged it everywhere I went too) with it making that ticking noise &
I have no doubt it still runs like a scalded dog and most certainly is
still ticking. My '02 ticks but not as loudly as my '01 did and I'm not the
least bit worried about it.Break that car in gentle for 500 miles and then
drive it like you stole it.At WOT the exhaust makes ALL undesirable
noises disappear. :yesnod:

Thanks for the good info :yesnod:
Since there are many posts about the noise and only two examples of failures, it sounds like there is no durability problem. My mechanic is confident the sound we are hearing is from the lifters and steep cam slope/ramp combined with what he calls "incorrect geometry". He's been building race engines for many years. Other muscle car buddies tend to agree. It sure sounds like a pump-up issue with the hydraulic roller lifters: rev your engine and let it settle. On my car, I can hear the lifter noise/clatter at a higher sound level before settling down. However, the frequency of the clicking does *not* change (the engine is at a fixed idle RPM). If it were the injectors, the frequency would change. All I hear is the amplitude (volume) change. This points to the hydraulic roller lifters.
I can hear what appears to be a loud valve tap coming from one cylinder. Its only noticeable around 1700 to 2000 RPM then. I don't hear it at lower or higher engine speeds. I can also hear the injectors. I am wondering if oil pressure is a factor. When hot (200F), I am only getting about 40PSI at those engine revs. When cold, the pressure is about 50PSI at the same revs. When I get the time, I bringing it in to the dealer. Can't stand the exhaust jingle either. Sounds like Santa is coming to town.

I took my car in for both those problems. Here is the outcome:
1. Lifter noise.
We fired my car up first thing in the morning, and no noise. There was another 2002 Z06 in the bay next to mine, they fired it up. It made the lifter noise  . The dealer called the noise normal. Temperature, RPM, and oil type appears to affect the noise.
2. Exhaust jingle.
Dealer repro'd the noise. They said wait for a fix from GM. Based on the posts on this forum, this problem has been around for a very long time. If you want it fixed, you'll probably have to do it yourself (X-pipe). I'm having mine fixed tomorrow (by a private mechanic).

Agree with av8tor3 100%. Machines make noise. Had 12 high performance motorcycles and 6 high performance cars. Each one had its own peculiar mechanical noises. I used to take them apart, take them back etc. Found that approach a waste of time at best, and risky at worst ( You could get Bubba the mechanic on his first day at the dealership).
Not to say I'm against diagnosing REAL problems, but after it has been established that " these things just do that", Run the **** out of it (within the normal performance envelope of the vehicle), and enjoy every second of it.
Z06-Nomad, I have the same noise. In fact, for some odd reason, when I had my headers installed the noise seemed to grow much louder. Anyway, I'm not letting it bother me. I'm just enjoying the car. If something goes wrong, then the warranty will cover it :yesnod: .
