Just picked up a 03' AE vert and figure I would do some simple stuff to it this weekend. Car felt a little sluggish. I shouldn't have expected the dealer to put any money into it before they sold it to me and I was right.
Found this super clean air filter.
And replaced it with this:
Cut the shroud underneath for good measure. She runs much better now.
Do you have some pics of where/how you cut the shroud? I'd like to do it too but am new to Vettes and still learning things. Thanks.
I'd have to pull the filter off. Should have done that before. The hole I cut was a little smaller than the height and width of the filter. I used a 1/4" drill bit and made about 40 "connect the dot" holes. Then I just cut it all around with a hack saw blade. Just be careful of the radiator.

Stay away from any standing water, hydro lock is not your friend
I had a VARARAM on my 99' coupe for 6 years with no problems. I figure anything less than 8 or 10 inches and I'm fine.
Big difference between a VARARAM and a cut shroud. I've had a cut shroud Breathless Vortex bottom breather for 15 years but I advoid any standing water. The center air dam pushes water to the filter.
The condition of the old filter causes me to wonder if any debris is lurking high up in the cavity between the radiator and the shroud. I found plenty when I put my drop light in that area.

I try not to drive in the rain. I imagine even 4 inches of rain could be deflected up as my car is lowered on the stock bolts.
Hate to break it to you all, but in real life terms, the stock filter was far from being considered dirty or clogged.
Not that anyone here would ever consider their air cleaner that dirty, which it really is not.
Just say'in
Chas

I forgot to take a picture of the other side of that filter!
if you look at the filter on the right side there is a gap, when that filter was installed it wasn't correctly located and appears that there cold have been unfiltered air passing the end of filter. Maybe some TB cleaner should be in your near future and clean the rest of the intake air track.

I hope that's not the case. I did look thru into the throttle body and it looked clean. No dirt or oil. I figured it
was the original filter from the factory.
