C5 not using all available gas???????
I ran all the Techron and BG cleaners through it I could get with no improvement.
I ran out of gas twice, both times around the 1/2 tank mark at about 250 miles.
I finally had a few hours this weekend and attempted to go inside and at least see what was in that right side tank that seemed to be useless.
I jacked the rear of the car and placed on stands.
Removed the right rear wheel. At this point I could easily see the access door to the right tank.
Removed the one bolt and one nut and the cover came off easily.
I cut the bottom third off of a 55 gallon plastic drum and placed under to catch whatever amount of gas was going to come out of the tank.
Removing the fuel lines was easy. Just pinch squeeze and pull and they came right off. One of them had a constant light stream flowing so I put a phillips screw driver in it to stop the flow.
I started removing the bolts that hold the unit in and the gas started to flow. It took maybe 10 minutes to completely drain out. Between 7 and 8 gallons came out.
I removed the unit and unhooked the small siphon pump from the lines. A little tricky but not bad.
Upon inspection I could not see through it or blow any air through it. It was completely clogged. I used a small piece of wire to run through it and what ever it was broke loose. I run the wire through it many more times and sprayed Brake Cleaner through it.
The lines where held on with small clamps that were crimped on. I cut those off to get everything apart for cleaning. When putting it back together I used small hose clamps that you tighten with a screw driver. The system would probably work with no clamps but I didn't want to take that chance.
I put everything back together. And filled it with gas.
The gauge has worked perfectly since then and I have been 285 miles so far. I will update again when I get a few more miles on it.
Total time to do this job was under 3 hours. Muck of that time was prepping for the job and being very careful with everything.
If I had to do it again I could probably do it in under 2.
The good thing is, so far I spent zero dollars on parts for this job. After getting inside and actually getting my hands on the parts I believe it is as good of a fix as if I had used new parts.
One last thing, The more I read on this topic the more intimidating this job felt. However, after I did it I realized it was not a big deal at all. I encourage anyone that is the least bit mechanically inclined to not hesitate to attempt this fix on your own. Even if you are using new parts.
Thank you guys for all the help here on the forum to newbie.
