Dropped my FRC off this morning to have the harmonic balancer replaced....... talk about expensive due to the way these car are made....
Provided them with an ATI balancer and ARP crank bolt. I was expecting a bill of about $200 bucks in labor..... OH NO......
I get a call from the dealership. They have to replace the crank seal and the belts. Plus the cost for installing "MY" ATI balancer...............wait for it..................... $475 parts and labor !!!
But hey, she's (my FRC) is 16 years old and I'm guessing its about time to start spending some money on her for maintenance and mods.
Next will be a new clutch (which I already have all the parts in the garage), which will be another trip to the dealership for the install.

Yeah, as the cars get older things need replacement. Hope they do a great job with the repair.
Our nephew is the service manger at the dealership and he always takes pretty good care of us. He gives us the "family" discount on repairs, so I only imagine what the regular price would have been for the work.

Have you ever done this job yourself to know what is involved? We're in the middle of our 2nd cam change now and I would gladly write the check to have it done for that cost. The steering rack needs to come off as well as most of the accessory drive system. It's a royal PITA! I'm just glad we're in no hurry to do ours and have a shop to work in (not our DD garage) and can close the door and leave it when it makes me mad.
Currently trying to deal with stripped crank bolts (don't know why) so be glad someone else is doing it for you.
She's hit 140K miles and has that rocker arm 'tick'.
Front oil seal is leaking and I can see a little 'wobble' down at the balancer.
I've been sitting on this 19K mile engine for a couple of years, so thinking I'm putting it in VERY SOON.
Already have some of the gaskets and others on order.
My gear puller is 40+ years old and "SHOT". ugh. So I'm going to have to buy a new one for that.
Pulled the water pump off, which came with it, and all looks good inside there.
Pulled valve covers, and true to expectations, she's like NEW in there as well.
I see oil seepage around the oil pan, so replacing those gaskets as well.
Thinking that since she's sat for so many years, doing the front and rear seals as well.
What are anyone's thoughts on the 'alignment tool' for the covers? Are tools of that nature suggested for both front and rear cover alignments?

Get them Art, from the videos I have seen and things that I read all point to one thing...........It WILL save you a bunch of HEADACHES, ( In the form of leaks ) in the long run.

Oh trust me, I am happy someone else is doing this work as I'm more than pretty sure it wouldn't have been an easy task laying on my back in my garage.

....While you have this opportunity, replace 'every' seal possible while having access to the engine as it is !! Jus Say'n...........and 'Yes' to getting or renting alignment tools !!

When we did mine, (I also used an ATI balancer, btw), we were originally just going to slide the rack out of the way, but noticed that the rack mount tab was broken. We chose to attack this over a holiday weekend, and could not get hold of a mobile welder, so we had to pull the whole subframe out, and send it out to be welded.
While it was out, it was very easy to address changing the leaky a/c compressor...it lasted 800 miles before it took a crap...(worse leak than the original)
But yeah...that bolt was a biotch. Did an ARP replacement, front seal, Gates Racing Blue belts, Dayco a/c tensioner and pulleys (the only USA made brand I could find), and Katech manually adjusted main-drive tensioner.
Was it leaking before? Were your pulleys making noise before???Sounds like BS to me.
They might not have put RTV sealant on the new water pump gaskets....actually I didn't see you mention new water pump gaskets...
Actually I couldn't say if the idler pulleys were making noise before because all I could here was the constant squealing / squeaking from the balancer.
As for the water pump they sent pics of the leak and coolant drops on the heater hose connections at the pump.

If I were to have done a cam install, it wouldn't have been $475 !
