Actually 4.10s are perhaps one of the best mods on a H/C car. Depending on cam selection, they can be beneficial mitigating the low end and most certainly put you in the correct power band up top at the end of the 1/4 mile.
Conceptually I couldn't agree with you more. But on the street, on street tires, I think you could most certainly fight with traction issues.
Take traction issues out of the equation and you are dead on accurate.
Does "offroad" mean no cats? I was thinking of going that route but I heard the smell can be unpleasant.
My car started off mostly as a track car and I went no cats. Eventually I started driving it more on the street and wished I had gone with a catted X pipe. My car stunk when driving it around. With the windows up and A/C on recirculate I could smell it slightly and it wasn't as bad but you could still smell it. With it off recirculate it came pouring in. Windows down, forget it. I'd come home and throw my clothes in the hamper.
I'd recommend going hi-flow or catted X pipe. The car did sound mean though with headers and TI bypass mod with no cats.
The smell is not a big factor with the stock cam. I did gears first on my last car, and was unsatisfied. As your financial situation improves, you may want to supercharge or turbo it, and you want 342s for that.

Yep, this! 4.10's can slow down a car with big torque, relatively low rpm engine. With H/C/I and goal of raising your rpm's to the moon, 4.10's cannot be beat.
Your comment about goals may get very expensive for you. If you just want to add mods here and there, you can end up with mods that does not work well together, causing you to re-mod, costing you more money. First, figure out what you want in the car and then develop a strategy / build from there.
As someone else mentioned, get some good tires, that will stick to the ground and you will be further ahead than many realize.
i swapped to a 3.73 when RPM did my trans I was really impressed with it best bang for the buck! with the 3.42 it felt like a boosted car you could feel when it hit the power band with the 3.73 its always in the power band really surprising for such a small ratio change, 4.10 if you do a lot of expressway driving might be a bit much i'm @ 2200ish rpm at 75mph
I'd save money for the mods you want. The problem with adding gears now is that as you increase power, assuming that's a future mod, the gear will become a traction problem.
3:42 is plenty of gear once you start making power and may be too much, I spin from a 55 roll.
