Default 98 coming tommorrow!!

Went to see a very clean 98 auto.coupe with 26k showing on the OD, so I made the guy an offer which he accepted, but have been reading about early C5 problems and am getting a bit hesitant, hopefully something with that low mileage shouldnt have any real problems if any, I said hopefully

I have had my 98 now for almst a year. The only problem I had with it is the battery leaqked a bit and ate up the vacuum hoses underneath, causing the A/C vents to blow in between levels. Otherwise, no issues.

Read about and buy this: http://www.complianceparts.com/

Best $40 you'll spend. Everyone around here will suggest it and they are right.

*edit* but you probably already know about this

A lot of what you have been reading is issues primarily from a lot of scared individuals.

The absolute worst possible thing that would potentially side-line a pre-2001 C5 that has very questionable parts status (i.e., discontinued OEM) would be the steering wheel position sensor (SWPS). As a recent tech thread has shown that should be a top of the bar forum sticky, even that issue can be rectified with some work. Other major questionable items like the EBCM issues can also be rectified with work.

At 26K miles on a car that is 18 years old I would be more worried about it's service history and what you may be purchasing in the interim to get the car to a full driver status. People like to really push low mileage buys and go after them, but low mileage C5s can have their issues. People on original tires (which I'm sorry; makes no sense whatsoever), questionable fluid service intervals, moveable components that are not stretched and given a "work out". Plenty more to potentially concern with than items that have seemingly scared away individuals from pre-2001 cars.

I have a 1999 M6 and all I can tell you is that I've enjoyed nothing but smiles every time I get in. For sure I dealt with some things like the column lock issue, but when you're dealing with a car as old as a C5 things are to be expected. You shouldn't go into any potential C5 purchase thinking you're going to just ride scott-free.

I have a 98 manual coupe with about 28K. Had it since new and the only issue I remember was replacing the wheel bearing. Also had the column lock issue that is easily fixed with the bypass. It's a late 98 with active handling.

From many forum observations... I believe that a LOT of the early model C5 problems stem from electrical issues... A GOOD battery can help avoid many of those issues... as can some preventative maintenance...good connections and grounds... learn to pull the codes and post them when you have ANY issues...
the battery leaked on some of the early models and when it did it leaked right on top of the PCM... NOT GOOD... make sure you address this possible issue...READ the STICKIES...
Oh yeah.. congrats on your new to you car it all sounds worse than it really is ... and it is intimidating at times but, you'll get it

97-00 autos too. I have a 99 m6 vert. Bought it last year with 15k on her. I replaced all fluids, belts and tires. Currently I'm on a trip at Gatlinburg, Smokey Mountains and Tail if the Dragon. Heading to Corvette Museum tomorrow. Car has ran like a champ so far.

Congrats on the purchase. I think you'll be fine and really enjoy the car. I have a '98 as well. Bought it in '07. Had the column lock issue within a few months and it's an auto. So get that taken care of as soon as you can. Other then that it's just had some small things and a few self induces issues.

No guarantees, but not every car has the issues that are mentioned here on the forum. Just something to consider.

Congrats on your recent purchase of the 98. I've had mine since new (Feb 1998, January 98 build) and have no regrets after 18 years. Post up all your issues here after spending some time with your C5. The experience and knowledge level of our fellow forum members is incredible in helping sort through and resolving problems.

Definitely pull the codes if not erased.....but go on condition like any used car.

Check everything electrical, fluids, consumables, HVAC on all positions, windows, lights, etc..thats what drives everyone nuts!

Even IF codes have been reset... the reoccurring ones that have a C are important and should be noted... IF it has H codes you may want to write them down for future reference...

CLEAR codes... Drive car>>> PULL CODES<<< beFoRe you KILL the Car

This will give you current "C" codes

You should install the LMC5 or CLB if not already installed. Change the plastic sway bar end links and replace them with the latest OEM metal end links if not already done. Even with only 26K miles, the plastic end links will be shot after 18+ years. Make sure to get the maintenance records, change the brake fluid if it's dark and change the Dexcool if it has not been changed in the last 4 years, even if it looks clean. If it comes out looking clean and clear and smelling new then you don't need to flush it. Inspect the trans fluid and change if discolored and change the oil and filter regardless. Check the date codes on the tires and replace them soon if they're over 8 years old. Also at that age expect minor issues like failing hood and hatch struts and window regulators and rocking seats. And make sure the battery is strong or replace with an AGM battery. I wouldn't worry about owning a nice low mileage '98. My '99 has had no major issues since I bought it in Feb '06 with only 1,600 miles on it. Congrats and enjoy you '98.

3 yrs. ago I purchased an A4 98 that had only 30K on the clock. It now has 42K. Only problem was a couple of TPM spit the bit. I have done some preventive replacements for my own peace of mind (belts, idlers, differential fluid, trans juice & filter etc.). It's my DD.
Also I am the 6th. owner. Good Luck and enjoy your ride.

I was originally looking for a newer Z06, but settled on a vert to meet my other half in the middle. Had initially thought I would only look at later C5's but found a very nice, well cared for '99 m6 vert with 30K at a very good price. I was on the fence about buying the earlier car but it turns out that the car has been phenominal! Only issue has been a bad, from the factory, two week old battery which set off some codes. Replaced the battery, codes gone, and the car runs and drives as new. Just thought I would relay my very positive experience on a earlier C5. Just a incredible performance car bargain! Y'all have a good one!!

Congrats on your purchase. I also have a 98 which I have owned for 10 years and have had no problems with it at all. I did the column lock bypass just for peace of mind. I don't think you will have any issues if the car was well maintained. Good luck!
