Default Questions about CAI

Hi I was wondering if the Z06 intake is different than the regular corvette intake. Air filter and piping not the actual LS6 intake. I see them for sale at higher prices than regular vette units. If they are different how good are they? CAI prices are crazy for the vettes. I'm a Fbody guy and the vette tax I've heard about is real. Lol. The hp gained VS dollars spent on a CAI has me wondering if it's worth it. Any suggestions on what one I should go with.

Hard to recall as it been years since I had my C5Z, but I thought I recalled something different about the ducting and/or airbox. Most guys that didn't want to spend money on a CAI went the DIY route. Research "zip tie" and/or "flip tie" mods. I grabbed a gently used Callaway Honker for my C5Z back in the day...worked well.

Its the same airbox across the cars. You can gain all the benfits of a CAI with a couple of zip ties, or you can chop up the airbox lid with a saw/holesaw. I wrote up the first zip tie mod thread.

When you see LS6 intake, more than likely you are seeing the Ls6 intake manifold which does make more HP than the LS1 intake, not the airbox and lid.

Thanks. I get the difference between a LS1 intake and the LS6 intake. I just wasn't sure about the air box and piping. I see people selling Z06 air boxes and piping for a higher price than standard corvette ones. So I didn't know if there was a difference.

If you want to buy a stock Z06 air box to replace the LS1 box, don't waste your money. The only difference is the center intake opening is larger, otherwise they are exactly the same. If you want the best in fitment, finish, quality and performance buy a Callaway Honker, a true CAI. Most custom intakes are nothing but fancy air cleaners. If you don't need to cut a hole in the radiator shroud when installing, then it is not a real cold air intake.

Got ya. I have a 2001 Z06. I was wondering if they were any different (better) than the standard vette air box and if a aftermarket intake would be worth the $$and effort.

Some really like the Vararam. It picks up air from the bumper where the foglights reside. I'm rally on the fence about it myself. Pain in the butt to install and may require a custom tune afterwards, depending on your car. Some need it, others don't seem to. Mine does. More $$$.
