1. Use the 9/16x18 die to extend the thread down to the insulator. Leave the die in place at the bottom of the thread, so you can clean up easily after cutting. Got the die from Amazon. About $10 IIRC.
2. Using my new Hurst **** as a guide to length, hacksawed off the shaft. It ended up being pretty much where the "factory" thread ended.
3. Wind the die back up the shaft - this will clean up the thread start area for you.
4. Re-assemble, re-install, add your **** of choice and enjoy shorter shifts.
I did completely disassemble the shifter mechanism while it was on the bench. Drilled out the 4 rivets and used some emery on a plate to take a sliver off the mating parts and re-assembled with 3/16 bolts, locknuts and threadlocker. This removed the slight amount of "slop" in the mechanism. When you re-assemble, don't forget to put some grease onto the mating surfaces. Been in place for a couple years now. Combined with new fluid in the tranny, shifting is not notchy or heavy, just shorter throws.

Hi folks, I don't have my step by step pix ready yet, but here is the finished product with the new Redline leather and the fully shortened shifter. I still have to do the anti venom washer, tho' it's shifting quite well.
I'm a little late to this thread, but here is another way to shorten a stock C5 shifter. You can also extend the threads and cut another inch off the top if you want it shorter.
See post #9. I did this back in 2007 and it's still in the car. A definite improvement over stock. A good low budget mod.

Nice work! Similar theory, different execution, same result. I didn't make an exact measurement, but I think I removed at least 2 1/2" from the whole thing.
Again thanks for all the input guys I went ahead and cut mine this weekend once I finally found the **** I was after.............I was also told to post pics so here you go.
