There are proper producsts dedicated to re dye-roofs...would use one of those before experimenting with unknowns. E bay has to have your choice. Good luck
I also have a light oak top and yes I did try cleaning it with convertible top cleaner, often. I still have black spots. I just chalked it up to old age, 1998. If anyone has a remedy, I would be interested.

Do you think the black spots are mildew?
Meguiars Convertible Top Cleaner claims to remove mildew stains from canvas, cloth and vinyl convertible tops.
You could try dipping a Q-tip in bleach and dab it on one of the black spots.

Make sure its a weak dilute bleach...that stuff is so aggressive that it probably eat a hole in your roof and make sure to rinse the roof like crazy afterwards....

I used a 50 -50 bleach and water for 20 mins then washed it using 303 Top cleaner. Dried in the sun and I applied Fabric convertible top spray from 303. Water off a ducks back now and it looks fantastic. Brand new. It was really bad and I tried a cornucopia of products to no avail.I bought the convertible top kit from 303 on Amazon for $17.00 plus $5.95 FEDX. Really glad I didnt dye it. Counter guy at Ecklers told me most use 303. So I did.
Does bleach, even diluted 50/50, attack or discolor the clear coat on the car? Would be almost impossible to keep it 100% off the paint unless you wrapped the car in plastic.
I have a lt oak top as well. I use 303 cleaner on the black spots, spray on, let it sit a few minutes and use a nylon brush before rinse. Seems to work but the black spots still come back from time to time.

I don't know. I didn't do it and if I did it would be as a last resort before replacing the top. It did work for the guy in the thread, but I would be very cautious about applying it. He probably brushed it on.

Great idea , Thanks ! The black spots are oil from an overhead door opener track rod. Got really hot here in Atlanta so the viscosity in the oil got diluted & dripped on the top. UGGGGh!

Oil? Simple Green degreaser might do the trick. Let it soak for awhile. Dying isn't going to work on oil.

I started with a light oak interior and top as well. I went to a black top for this reason. FYI, I learned that the black spots are from the top going up and down as the material folds and rubs against itself when lowering the top. One recommendation was to keep hand towels in the trunk and put them in between the top as it folded on itself when lowering the top. I never tested this since I went to a black top.

I have the Light Oak top on my '01. It has 75K miles on it and no black spots. I clean and treat it once a year with 303 and it still looks like new.
I've tried cleaning my Lt Oak top a number of times with the recommended cleaners but you can still clearly see the black. Not sure if its stains or merely the backing material showing through? I dunno, but I've never heard of dying the top so JD's post is very intriguing to me.
How much did this cost, if you don't mind me asking. Do you know what product he used?

If it's the backing material showing through, it may be time for a new top.

That's exactly the point I'm at. I never drive it in the rain, but I obviously use it to wash the car, or if it gets too chill out late at night for the wife. It other wise has no leaks, just looks stained. So depending on how much a dye job costs, I might be able to get another year or two out of it if I go black. Sounds like jdvann was in the same boat. Hopefully, he can chime in with more detail.

My top was dyed by the PO so I can only speculate. My top is in good and not leaking condition. I suspect my top is original and either the PO had the same problem or liked a black top. I definitely prefer the black as I have found it very easy to take care of. I did not know it was dyed until I looked under the liner. I can only vouch for how easy it is to maintain now that it is black.
