Default Console Lid/door

The lid on my console is hard to open all the way up.. It opens maybe a 4th of the way, then it has to be forced past that point to open the rest of the way .. does any one else have this with theirs ? My car is a 04 Convertible.. Thanks

Once you hit the point of resistance, pull it toward you slightly, then open the rest of the way. I believe the linkage was designed this way due to lack of clearance for the the lid against the passenger seat in the full open position. It effectively moves the fully open lid slightly toward the driver thus providing the necessary clearance.

Just one of those C5 quirks you learn to love...

My lug nut key in my 99' vert is in trunk, under the mat in a little cubby cutout by left side cubby.

pivot areas does no harm and makes the pull toward the driver side easier.

Thanks. Learn something here every day. I just thought it was a design flaw and that's as far as it opened.

I can open mine but thought it was broken due to the steps taken needed to open fully.

It wasn't in the manual, I looked

I thought at first I broke mine over the weekend when I discovered that feature while installing a new shifter.

It's answers like this to an offbeat question that makes this forum so valuable. I had just wondered the same thing yesterday. Jeff

Just take a can of 3 in 1 light oil... Put a single droplet at each swivel point (8 I believe)? Open/close a few times & it'll be like new. All C5's will have a day come when that console door needs lubricated.

I have lubricated mine over the years with dry lube, but last year I noticed it was harder to open than usual. I noticed that one of the hinge links had broken, so I installed a new hinge. Mine gets a serious workout, I am guessing about 30,000 cycles in the past 16 years!

Just lubed my hinges. Works like it's supposed to now. Thanks. I have been putting up with it for 4 years. I guess I should have asked a simple question here.

Amazing...after all this time I didn't realize the console door would open full vertical. I just happened upon this thread searching for something else. Had always thought how useless the center console in these cars were...now it is only semi-useless. Even when I removed the back half of the console to replace the fuel door release switch I did not realize this. I still believe they should have done away with the console completely and had a decent double cup holder instead.

yep took me too long to figure that out as well. But when I installed my MGW shifter i ended up just removing the center console lid all together as having it on there put my elbow in a weird position when having the short shifter, without the console lid my arm is so much more comfortable while shifting.
