Default Overheating and no A/C

All you guys out there, I need help again. It's been around 100 degrees every day. My 98 has started overheating. It got so hot it said reduced power as I watched it go over 160 degrees. I have replaced thee thermostat and housing and a new overflow tank cap. I went for a 5 mile drive-that round trip-total mileage-tonight. When I backed into the garage my new antifreeze was coming out from around the cap and steaming. Any ideas what to check next. The fans were coming on, but I don't know how long they stayed on. While this was happening my A/C flashes about 5 times and turns off. It was working real good before. I checked the R134-A pressure and it was high. Any possibilities what could be the problem with one or both. Or is one causing the other? I know somebody out there had to have a similar problem before. Thanks-DBH-Vette.

Did the overheating start before replacing the thermostat?

Before replacing the "overflow tank" cap?

Over 160 or 260 degrees?

Have you purged all the air out of the system? I know anytime I touch any hoses or coolant, I always take off the overflow tank cap, turn on the car put the heater on max and let it idle till 220+ degrees to purge out all the air in the coolant system, turn off the car put the cap back on. Wait an hour or two come back and check overflow level and fill if needed. And im good to go.

If your car was overheating prior to the thermostat changes and you have properly "burped" the system, your radiator is likely plugged.

As far as the AC turning off, I believe there is a self preservation mode that shuts down the AC if the engine temp gets too high.

I went through something similar recently. I had to replace my radiator. All is good now.

All the problems started before I changed the thermostat and cap. Would the radiator stop the ac from working also.

When all else fails on high temps, do the following:
Pull the radiator and do a complete clean.
Change the hoses...all of them.
Change the t-stat....you already have done this.
Do a complete system flush and replace w/Dexcool & distilled water
New radiator cap....you already have done this
Do a system "burp"...get ALL the air out
Check to make sure your water pump is working properly (take the cap
off, run the engine at idle to get up to temp and see the coolant is
moving thru the over flow tank.

The above should keep you cool all summer.

Not sure if the 260 temp would stop the A/C but following my prior post WILL make your A/C run cooler and the transmission fluid cooler= longer life.

Focus on getting the overheat problem resolved. That is your #1 priority. If you don't, you will toast the engine. Once you do resolve the overheat problem, you will likely solve the AC issue as well. If not, at least you have one less problem to solve.

My AC stopped working when I had my overheat issue. My radiator was plugged on the inside. (Unknown mileage on the radiator. Car has 252k miles) I replaced the radiator and hoses. I did nothing to the AC and it functions normally now.

...Make sure that you physically/manually clean the outside of radiator vanes (between the vanes) as well. It tends to be one of the most overlooked/ignored maintenance procedures that effect a majority of C5 cooling problems....

Thanks -I'll remember that. The car has over 160,000 miles and I have no records on it. So I don't know if or when anything was done on it.
