bought my first 02Z Electron Blue in 06 and loved it, had an 01Z yellow for a very short time. then got into a yellow 07Z about 4 years ago. I sold that a couple of months ago and just wanted to go back to a C5Z.
it was a hard choice for which color because i had found a yellow, red and black one, all clean, all low miles. went with the black one with factory chromes.
20k miles and very clean.
first thing this weekend is its getting lowered.
2nd thing is the valve springs because the build date is 8/2. both my 02 and 01 broke springs.
so here's what i wanna do with it. i want to supercharge it with supporting bolt ons. it will not be a daily driver but i do want it to perform as one but with power. i'd like to get in the 550 to 600 range.
so ive read a lot of the threads on replacing the springs yourself which i might attempt or just let a shop do it and while its there get some other things done. exhaust, maybe a cam?
i'll do the supercharger next year, so a two stage attack here. but i definitely wanna do the springs immediately. so should i do heads, cam and exhaust now? or just exhaust and never do heads/cam and just do the supercharger.
i also want to be albe to drive this car on trips, up to 400 miles.
if i take end up taking it to a shop does anyone have recomendations of places in the houston area? the only place i really ever took my vettes to was franks vettes in spring for general work.
I would wait and do springs, s/c, alky/meth, possible clutch, possible fuel pump, injectors and boost-a-pump, exhaust and tune at one time. Not sure you need to do heads/cam at this power level and use for the money spent versus return? While you are at it....an electric exhaust cut out would be pretty cool. Start collecting parts now so that part is taken care of when time comes for install.
It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of where you want the Z to be when finished. I would start collecting parts now and do all the engine mods at once, so you don't have to keep taking things apart and getting tuned. I good blower cam will make a huge difference with the right set-up and cam installs aren't too awful on these cars.
THe 2002-2004 C5 ZO6 cam has delivered very good results in centrifugal supercharged C5's or C6's. Something similar will deliver more power are the Crane "Direct Fit" cams at $411 on Summit website. Although designed for use with oem springs, moving to to forced induction ALWAYS benefits from better springs.
The first link is a Crane grind very similar to GM LS6 cam in the bottom link...check the specs. Both cams add decent power and hold you over until installing supercharger if you are considering doing this in stages.
For the power you want, just do springs, then the blower when you can. No need for cam, much less heads, you will be over 500whp with no other mods easy.
my 02ZEB broke a spring sitting at a red light. luckily no more damage.
then when i traded it for the 01Z yellow, that one broke a valve spring on the highway, tore the engine up. sad thing part is it had a cam in it and apparently they didnt upgrade the springs. but thankfully, the lot that sold it to me, franks vettes in spring houston, hadnt finished the title papaerwork. he ate that one, i only had the car for a week. he gave me back my 02Z.
didnt have any issues with my 07Z
the salesman at the dealership sent the wrong VIN to the bank, i literally bought another vette on the lot, but the idiot let me sign paperwork for the Z i test drove and took home. calls me the next day and trys to explain. i just took it back and said i'll call when i determine what i want to pay for it.
i love the lines on all vettes but i really like the FRC look, kinda looks like a mid engine. i like how clean the lines are. smaller car.
so now im vetteless until i make a decision.
found a 04Z black one that has a built 408 stroker, kenne bell supercharger, heads, full exhaust, etc. 800hp/800tq
