I have a 00 FRC with 47000 miles that the PO changed the trans fluid to Redline D4 ATF synthetic . I've read conflicting posts regarding using or not using synthetic in a 97 -00 6 speed . The shifting on this car is very notchy and I removed the B&M ripper shifter that came with the car back to stock that helped a little bit . Thx in advance .
Fwiw a few years ago I drained the amsoil torque drive(8k miles on it)in my 03 C5 z06, and put in some redline D4 ATF(recom from a friend who said it worked wonders on his honda si and that I should swap it for better start up cold shifting) it made my shifting like crap and worser when warm or cold. Drained it after only 30 miles, put the used amsoil back in and was back to normal crisp shifting when warm.
Also if your shifter is notchy try the anti-venom mod, it seriously works wonders.
...I was one of those that went against the grain on this topic when I did a complete fluid change on 'everything' on my car approximately 30,000 miles ago or 4 years ago !! I'm not trying to convince anyone in doing this, but I just wanted to let others know that I personally haven't had a issue at all by using Amsoil in the trans in my DD, BTW, I read sometime later about it not being recommended, and I'm glad that I at least used one of the best synthetics available !!....
On my '98, I used Valvoline Dex/Merc when I changed tranny fluid a while back. It meets the "old" Dex III spec (what these transmissions need and were designed for) and it's widely available and not expensive. Bought a jug of it from Wallies. Shifts are slick, not notchy. Just replacing old fluid with new does make a real difference to shifting, even though there is no actual GM specified change interval.
