Without a doubt, the easiest and least expensive way to upgrade the system with the more bang for your buck is new speakers that can be bolted on in place of the factory ones, keeping the rest of the system intact.
OEM C5 Speaker Sizes:
-Front
Twiddler: 3.5"
Subwoofer: 8"
-Rear Twiddler
Coupe: 6.5"
FRC/Z06/Convertible: 5.25"
Give this a try, and then reassess to determine how far you want to go down this road
:
Get 3.5" 2-way coaxial speakers to replace the doors' twiddlers and 2-way coaxials of the right size for the rear. Don't touch the OEM subwoofers.

...Or do it the right way and replace everything and be blown away at what you've been missing.

Saxy, in
Post #2 above, when I answered your original question I forgot to address a concern you had. No, you don't need or
want Bose replacements
If money is tight, just get 2-way coaxials for the 4 twiddlers and you'll hear the difference

I just went through this. I replaced the h/u with a Kenwood single din (cheap) and the speakers with the JL Audio along with the JL Audio 400w amp. The door speakers are the components and the back are the coax. Sounds so much better than the stock set up. In hind sight, wish I would've went double din, but the cost was prohibitive at the time. Wanted the money for suspension upgrades.
The main thing I wanted was bt capability and able to play my playlist.

I did not do the damage I just got my '99 vert and the speakers just don't sound very good. I was very satisfied with the stock Bose in my previous '99 actually sounded pretty good.

You will need to further verify fitment, but a quick search produced this:
JL Audio Evolution™ C2 Series 2-way car speakers C2-350X (3-1/2")
C2-525X (5-1/4")
C2-650X (6-1/2")
Not only they are from the same manufacturer, but they all belong to the same line. This should reasonably assure you they have the same timbre.
They can be found in Amazon or Crutchfield

Hit the dealer and make sure you get a few of the plastic pins that hold the door panel to the door. You WILL break some!
I bought the speaker upgrade kit from Dennis at DoubleD.
Good Luck!

I put in 3 way Focal speakers and a Pioneer head unit years ago dumping the Bose, the speakers took some work the rest was simple, very happy with the sound quality.
