Default Sucking Oil

The oil-sucking can be prevented by installing a catch can. AMW and Greddy make catch cans, but a homebuilt catch can may be built using a Campbell-Hausfield air tool oil separator from most tool stores, including AutoZone. The AMW and Greddy cans are ~$100, but look great. The CH can is $15-25 for all the parts, and you can see how much oil is in it.

Above pasted from the intro for new C5ers. Anyone got visuals on installing this catch can and what it looks like afterwards? Mine uses half a quart per 700 miles or so, is that about right for this issue?

How hard do you drive it? What oil do you use? Have you been under the car looking for leaks?

Mine has only used oil once. It was a qt low after crossing South Dakota. 400 miles at 85 mph at 100 degrees. Has not used any before or since.
1/2 qt in 700 miles is a lot.

A catch can will only trap the oil that gets past the PVC valve. If you are losing/using a half quart very 700 miles - it's not the PVC - look elsewhere. The PVC valve would pass - maybe a teaspoon or two of oil every 3000 miles or so.

That is a whole lot, are you sure it's using that much every 700 mi.?

I think a quart or so between oil changes is ok depending on how hard the car is driven, but that would be way too much to be normal.

Answering all I drive the car about once or twice a week, no noticeable oil leaks, mostly just modest cruising speeds, haven't really got down on it other than the inaugural donut burnout once. I may be a bit off on the milage, it may be more like a 1000 miles. I added 1/2 quart yesterday and will clock it this time. 2002 model with 68,500 approx.

Just about anything put in-line of the pcv return can catch some amount of oil. The compressor filters usually have very small reservoirs and they saturate quickly. My standard size cans hold 4oz and can be expanded if you have the room.

After that of course they are not all made the same, I have a couple twists in addition to catching oil.

-up gradable/ down gradable/ re configurable with 7 fitting options.
-open, closed, and hybrid (closed with pressure release) venting options
-stock to 1500hp capacity per can (dual can systems available)
-boost friendly
-quick turn drain, can removal or disassembly not required
-made in the USA

If I can help getting you set up with the right one for your build please just let me know.

Ok, my '01 has burned oil since I got it and from what I read at the time, the '01 does it because the LS1 changes made in '01 included a 90PSI oil ring that allows blow by and they changed it for '02 once they figured it out. I had posted this in another thread and someone mentioned this catch can fix thing.

As far as I know it is burning oil due to the oil ring, not anything to do with PCV. If I am wrong, please let me know.

Mine burns about a quart between changes (every DIC indication for change). I carry 2 quarts in the back and check my oil regularly.

<edit> I drive the **** out of my car. 70k miles in 2 years, mostly back roads.

This is very helpful, Is the Gibbs oil sold at parts stores and in similar viscosity that I use with the current Mobil synthetic (5W something)?

thanks
