Thinking about buying a C5

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
Traveled from South Western NC to Upper WV for my vette the end of December 2015 for mine. 2000 base coupe, 6 speed manual, tan/black interior, Ride Control, Heads Up Display (HUD) and Seat Memory pkg, Metallic Red w 31k miles for $16,900. Love it and my first also!
We looked on a ton of sites as far north as NH! Cargurus.com is where we found mine. Craiglist is good as mentioned also. Cars.com is another one. If the OP wants a manual, stay away from the franchised places like DriveTime. All they have are automatics.
Good luck in your search OP and take your time. Test drive a few! Be careful also! Make sure Traction Control is ON!
As many say, you just have to be patient with money waiting and when you find the right deal hop on it!
I think you've hit on what will probably end up being my biggest challenge. I will probably have to travel to find the C5 for me, which means I won't be able to have my mechanic check it out. I will have to learn what to look for myself. I suppose I could talk to my mechanic and he will be able to tell me what to look for, and I should probably print out the stickies on this site. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but I just haven't learned all of the C5 specific quirks yet. I suppose that will come with time and studying. I will definitely be checking out cargurus.com...
Welcome to the party...

There are a lot of stickies and posts about what to look for when buying, but from my experience I ran into the following:
1. Driver side seat bolster needed new foam and had a tear that I had repaired - $150
2. All fluids needed to be changed (coolant, oil, diff, tranny, brakes, and clutch) - ~$350
3. Front and rear sway bar end links were shot - $150
4. HVAC display was dim/blacked out so I had to pull the unit out and solder the connections as per the instructions found here:

I have also added a cat-back exhaust system by Borla ($60 for muffler shop - mufflers were free from a friend!), tinted the windows ($185), and bought a battery tender plus ($50).
These cars really are a tremendous amount of fun. Do your homework, have the money in hand, and wait on the right deal. When I ran across mine I thought it was too good to be true. The gentleman had all of the service records, receipts, and even had the original window sticker laminated! You will know a good deal when you see one.
