I'm gonna lurk in here if you don't mind. I think the stock alternator is the ugliest thing in the engine compartment and would love to get a chrome one - but they are pricey. I've also read about horror stories when you switch out your oem alternator.
I pc'ed mine rather than replacing but you can have the casing chromed or polished if that's your preference. If it's pc'ed or painted, make sure all the contact points between the alt, bracket and head are free of paint to ensure continuity.
Pulling the alternator apart is a little tricky if you've never done one of these before but is definitely doable. You'll need a heavy-duty soldering iron.

I have a polished 170a billet tech on mine... some of their older models would cause a charge system fault message because the alternator would not self excite and you would have to rev the car up to around 1500rpm to get it going... I'm not 100% positive on this but I believe their newer models are set up to self excite so you won't get this error anymore and don't have to rev the car to get it to start charging... I got mine early this year and it has worked great so far, no error messages, starts charging on it's own, and holds solid voltage all the time... there are also some tuning tricks that can be done to get them working right but I wouldn't be able to tell you the specifics on that... I also smoothed and powdercoated the alternator bracket like patches did... it's a bit of work but worth it in the end, that bracket is one of the ugliest parts in the engine bay
