Default 2002 Automatic Shifter Issue

Got in my vette this morning, pulled out of the garage, left it running (in park) to go close the garage door. Come back and shift into drive and the car won't move. Turned it off, and started it up and shifted into drive and it still won't move. Wouldn't move in reverse either. Turned car back off, and forgot to shift into park, started it up in reverse.....without my foot on the brake. It started just fine but won't go anywhere. The shifter moves very easy. Seems like it's locked in park...but it's not really locked in park. I can move the car while it's in park. It will roll without doing anything. Key doesn't have to be in the ignition at all for the car to move (rolling it). But it won't engage into drive or reverse either.

I read several articles here about the shifter cable and the plastic bushings. Also read where you can tie something back and keep it from locking. Are the bushings more or less what it might be? Another thing it did while we were moving in back in the garage. I had the key turned on (engine not running) and the wipers were coming on by themselves as well. Couldn't make them turn off while the key was in the on position. Could this be a fuse issue and a bushing issue? I'm confused!

Thanks. What about the wipers coming on and not going off? And when I went to the link you provided, it's talking about not being able to shift out of park. I can shift into any gear. And start it in any gear without stepping on the brake. It's like the car is stuck out of park but not in any gear really because it won't go either. Right now it's in my garage with a board under the tires because it will roll. It's almost like the cable itself isn't connected at all maybe.

It sounds like the transmission is "fixed" in the neutral position irregardless of what position you put the shifter lever into. Do a search on the A4 shifter and linkage, there are several informative threads describing the problem and recommended fixes.

Do u wash ur car often or does it ever get driven in the rain? Sometimes the drain udders under the wiper motor get clogged with leaves and other debris which causes water not to drain and submerge the wiper motor in water which causes the wipers to become possessed! Its really the circuit board that gets wet and causes the issues not the actual motor.

It's kept in the garage and I don't drive it in the rain. Haven't washed it for 2 weeks. I drove it last weekend and had no issues with the wipers. It started when we were pushing in back into the garage. I back it in the garage so we were pushing it backwards and the wipers started going off.

Sounds like the bushing let go in the neutral pos, when you were shifting.no clue on the wipers.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm thinking the shifter cable is broken. I pulled it out of the garage, put it in park. Got out of the car and Went to close the garage door and then got back in the car. Put it in drive and nothing! Wouldn't move. Luckily I can start it and my mechanic is right down the street. Will just push it to his shop on Monday.

If it is just the bushing you can get them from the auto parts store for a couple if bucks.no need to change the cable if it's just the bushings.

the wiper problem could be a cracked circuit board in the wiper motor.

It's just not right that some corvettes have automatics.
