Measure diameter and threads per inch. That will tell you the thread size. Then chase the thread using the correct size die. Use care when starting the die so you are engaging the thread and not cross threading them.
Or get a thread restorer file - Amazon among others has them. Not expensive, and you can clean up multiple threads-per-inch sizes with the one tool. You will need to get a measure of the TPI tho' to know which one to get.
The other way to do it if you are comfortable with your skills is to use a fine bladed hacksaw. Start at the first "good" thread and work it through the bad area, sawing at any "flattened" threads until the nut will screw on by hand. I've done it many times - works just fine.

HELP!
I pulled my stock steering wheel off my 03 ZO6 and damaged the first thread on the wheel shaft
Anyone know what size the threads are - and best way to repair them??
I also damaged the threads on my 03 strg shaft. The correct thread size is a metric 14 x 1.5 pitch. No one usually stocks this size, but I went to Ace hardware and they were happy to order for me a single tap for the nut and a dye to clean up the shaft threads..worked like a charm. No need to purchase a expensive whole set of tap and dyes.
