I have been trying to sell my '73 for a couple of years now and I have a guy who is offering an even trade for a 2004. Can any of you more knowledgeable folk give me some hints as to what to look for in a 2004. I love Corvettes but I'm not an expert

Keep yours, my opinion is that vert is worth $19,000-$23,000. I have a feeling down the road you might regret the trade and wish you had the 73 still........

I wouldn't trade him even. Your car is worth more. His car and 4-5K might be a fair deal for both of you.

There is no way that I would part with your 73 and I own a 2000 coupe that I enjoy. I would keep the 73, it's going to be worth a lot more than our C5's in years to come.

The 2004 looks like a very nice car. There is a big difference between the 1973 and the 2004. I had a 1968 vert 327 350Hp 4 speed and sold and purchased a 1998. What a difference in ride and performance. If you are going to drive your corvette the 2004 is the way to go. If you are wanting an investment and a show car the big block 1973 is what you want. I would not trade even you need 2K to 4K from the buyer.

To be honest, as much as I love the Corvette, I'm really trying to get out of the Corvette business. I bought the car in 2008 for $29,400 just before the economy crashed (lucky me ). I'm sure I paid too much for it, and then I sunk about $9,000 into it. Mostly on engine, exhaust and suspension. So I'm in for about $38,000. I'd love to get that back, but that ain't gonna happen. The car is sound and runs great but it needs a little cosmetic work and I'm just tired of putting money into it. I think that is what is killing me on selling it. The market is also saturated with these cars.

Here's the good bad and ugly on my car....

The front bumper needs to be replaced. It is showing it's age.
There is something draining the battery. I installed a quick disconnect to keep the battery from draining. Could be a cheap fix....or not.
Although it has A/C, it is pretty much useless. Doesn't work well and will need a conversion kit to bring it up to standards.
The car is like driving an oven. Lots of heat coming off that big block. Can't drive it in the summer.
It's a gas hog.....nuff said.
I'm a pretty big guy. it's all I can do to just get in and out of it.
Windshield has a small crack.
Emergency brake release button has popped out.
Drivers side window is very slow coming up. Probably gummed up. may need new motor soon.
Passenger window finally got stuck. Managed to get it back up but probably needs gears cleaned and maybe new motor.
T-top's leak. Can't drive it in the rain, although I normally wouldn't anyway.

I thought maybe if the C5 was an equivalent trade, I might enjoy actually driving it for a while, then sell it.

^^^^^I must have missed that in the description........that is all minor stuff but I understand your position. We all have different opinions as you have seen, most of us agree you should keep it but not sure all of us knew the little problems and story behind why you would like to sell. If you trade for that car you will only be losing more money and in the end as I said earlier you might want the 73 back. As someone said earlier hold onto the 73 and go buy a high mile C5 to enjoy while you get the 73 back up to snuff. Again we all have opinions but it's ultimately your decision. I still say keep the 73 the C5 verts are a dime a dozen yours is very unique and we all know there are not that many around in the condition yours is in with matching numbers no less........good luck in your decision.

Drive your car to Tulsa. Crawl out of it as your body is going to ache all over (I know as I drove a well suspensioned 78 for nine years, four of them on stock seats). Then get in the 2004 and drive for 100 mile test drive. Buy/Trade for the 2004, drive home and get out if it feeling like you just had a massage and getting over 25 miles to the gallon. Enjoy your 2004.

My wife and I put 5,500 miles on our 2000 in 18 days this June. Miles of smiles instead of miles of pain.

Well if you haven't driven a C 5 you might not want to sell it after driving it !!!!!!

although your vette is very nice....I think there is smaller market on the 73 versus 68-72. As you have said...you have been trying to sell if for a couple years with little luck. So....if the C5 checks out.....see what the guy will do....tell him you can trade for his vette plus 5k cash.....ball in his court. Maybe then negotiate to 3-3500 and his vette.....both of you are happy. Good luck

I think this is about right like most of these guys and gals have said. I have been in the C3 world for 20 years. I am only on my first year in the C5 world. As a C3 guy I would say in today's market and this time of year with the things you listed as needed for a 73' big block 4 speed your looking $21-24k being realistic. From my research on the C5 market before buying mine I would say that 04' is $18k-23k realistically. I would say do the deal with roughly $2k cash coming your way if you can. Good Luck

There is a world of difference between the two cars. The C5 will be much more comfortable, fuel efficient, and obviously more technologically advanced.

As much as I like older Vettes, I want something reliable and comfortable these days so my choice would be the '04.
