Yep, started with the very first, slushbox called a powerglide. Hard to believe that "America's only true sports car" started production life with only an auto trans available. Guess the GM top staff were physic.
Cheers,
Chas
Just kidding. I had two vettes with powerglides. A 62 and a 65.
I've had two back surgeries: removal of a cyst that invaded a hole in my L4 in 2002, and fusion of my L3-L4-L5 in 2007. After those surgeries I could no longer stand to stomp on the clutch for any extended period of time. So I sold my BMW M5 manual transmission and began driving auto boxes.
Bought my 2002 A4 C5 in 2010. I, too, didn't like the "mushy" shifting but after research learned I could have the transmission "tuned" to firm up the shift points. So I had my wrench retune the tranny's shift points which made me a happy camper.
Today, that C5 produces 600rwhp/520 lb/ft through an RPM Level 6 transmission. Why upgrade the tranny? Because my wrench advised the stock A4 wouldn't likely withstand the strain put out by my built engine. Still, the shift points are crisp, not mushy, so I can feel the power transfers.
