I would never change just the gears. Have the diff gone through and replace seals and bearings while it is apart. Yes - assuming the case is in good shape, it can be reused and upgraded to 3.73's.
I went from 3.42's to 3.90's. Big difference for the better!
changing the whole diff is a diy project. changing out the gears requires a pile of specialized tools.
1) I like this idea. I just bought a 4 post lift, and could probably make a winter project out of this. I could buy a used differential, have it gone through, and swap it out keeping my stock setup intact; correct?
2) Where does the speedometer pick up it's signal? Is this something I can have my tuner adjust after I do a swap? Or is there a mechanical change I need to do somewhere? I'd likely have it retuned anyhow after the swap, if I didn't have him to the whole job entirely.
My 2000 MN6 is at 460RWHP. I have been thinking about a gear change to provide some extra excitement; as well as upgrading the brakes. I'm embarrassed to say I've never even checked to see what ratio my car came with stock; but I think it's 3.42, correct?

the spedo is not effected, that is done off axle speed and only needs calibrarion if you change wheel diameter, if you were automatic it would need a tune to change shift points, all manuals were 342's

mpetty, unless you're simply hankering to do this work yourself, drive up to RPM transmissions (just outside of Indianapolis) and let them do it for you. They'll be done within a day, and you'll be on the road back home.
While it's been several years since I was at their shop, I was amazed at how quickly they are able to do this sort of work. Good luck whatever you decide to do.
Hi all I have an auto 99 car, currently a 3.15 I believe.. And have custom Diablo Intune , so shift points moved, firmness etc...
Would I see good performance benefit going to say 3.73 or 3.90 built box? Just drop in and go? No other mods?
Seem to remember reading one if the reasons the Z does sub 4 secs to 60 is gearing in its manual box..
Something like an RPM built one or similar?
Going to 3.73 or 3.90 would be a great move, so long as you're okay with higher highway RPM's. 3.42 wouldn't be worth the change IMO.
The Z also has steeper rear gears (3.42), 130# less weight to push, wider tires, and around 60 more ponies (among other small niceties).
