I'm talking about the clear plastic dust cover that protects the HUD mechanism. My guess is that it had gotten brittle over the years and it didn't take much pressure to crack it in two. I am taking my car in tomorrow for a new windshield and figured that it will be an excellent opportunity to replace the cracked cover.
I cant be the only one who has encountered this problem, so I am hoping to get some advise on replacing this cover. Where can I get a new one, or, how can I fabricate one.
Any input would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Mike.

Gene Culley has the bezels with the HUD kit, I assume that means you can get them new still. Idk. Call him.
As to the replacement, the windshield being out isn't going to help you any. The screws come in from underneath so you'll still need to pull the dash pad to fix this.

Hmmm... I don't think mine has such a thing. No lens to break. Mine goes down inside the projector housing with nothing but air to protect it. I'd have to reach way down inside to even get to the mirror down there. Mines new as of 2013 or so, maybe 2014, I don't recall. Maybe they made different ones with differing constructions, idk.
Well, either way the projector needs the dash pad out to do anything so while I may have misunderstood the problem, the explanation still works.

Interesting that your HUD has no covering. Perhaps a previous owner customized my dash. I wouldn't call it a lens because it is not designed to refract the light passing through it. It is simply a clear plastic sheet that covers the HUD mechanism. It fits under the bezel, like glass in a picture frame. I would say that it is similar to the thickness of the plastic blister packaging material that we all love so much.
Anyhow, thank you all for the input. By the way, my car is a 2002 Z06.

Mines a 98 but it came with no hud, I cut the dash and installed it after the fact so I can't say what 'year' the hud would be for. I assumed they were all the same. Regardless, they weren't offered in 98 so it certainly wasn't for a 98.
I kinda questioned it right from the start, why isn't there a lens over this I can clean. But, it's been in for years now in a Vert (read - dust galore all the time) and it's still looking great. I don't mess with it. maybe it's like the old camera saying, lenses are for looking through, not for looking at. That's the old adage used for people who fuss about lens cleanliness. Lenses really like left alone. I guess it's a bit late for mentioning that.
