Default Replace Only Ignition Switch?

Have seen many post on here how to repair ignition switch also how to replace the key tumbler. Can not find one on Jst ignition switch, is it possible to just replace the ignition switch and keep the original key tumbler? Would like to replace this before I start having any issues with it.

2002 C5 Auto

Also how difficult will this be? Have previously removed hvac display to send out to be rebuilt. Had no trouble r/r hvac display. noticed ignition switch when I had it all appart, what more would I have to remove to get Ign. Switch out?

Thanks all!

It isn't hard, I did same thing a couple years ago to correct an hvac issue. I used the service manual, but I think I have seen a thread here on how to repair. Maybe others can weigh in...

Thanks just worried about removing the key cyl from ignition switch and then I guess it should just snap onto the new ign switch?! So I should be able to use my current key with the old lock cyl on the new ign switch with out having to program the key correct?

If you have the skills to remove the HVAC panel you have the skills to remove the ignition switch You will need to remove the knee bolster in addition to the center console. The black "ring" over the lock cylinder pulls off. Be sure to pull it off straight so you don't damage it. Make note of the direction the wire wraps around the cylinder. Then there are two bolts to get to the switch out.

To remove the lock cylinder from the switch you will need the key in the cylinder. There is a tab that needs to be pushed down to slide the cylinder out of the switch. Rotate the key until the tab pushes down and pull out the cylinder. Reverse the process to install new switch. Make sure you DISCONNECT the battery before doing the work.

Since you have an auto trans the shifter has to be in Neutral (if I remember right) to get the cable out of the back of it
