Anyone have an opinion on the quality of this install? First hand experiences would be great. Does the car remain tight after the modification? Do they live up to the 3 week install? Is the top a pain to store? Thanks.
Although i can NOT answer any of your questions in DETAIL, I CAN say that i have NEVER heard a negative thing about their work/practices:nono:. There are a few owners of their conversions on this forum who seem to be quite pleased:yesnod:. Maybe they will chime in.....
If you are going to do it, Targa is the way to go for sure. The vert conversion does not look right IMO, you lose the hard top look which looks so great. Good Luck
Yes , I had my Z06 converted into a targa about a year ago . I have no complaints . The car is tight and I cannot feel the difference . The top simply slides in the trunk when you want to drive topless . The targa has two levers on the front and one in the back . In seconds you have the top off . The work is done very quickly by them and looks factory . If you'd like pictures please drop me a line .
I have been told that it is very expensive to ship your car round trip. I wish John had a couple of facilities in the states to make it easier to get to and less expensive.
I don't have the targa, but Caravaggio did my vert conversion. I can't speak highly enough about John, his shop, or the quality of the work done. I've had mine about a year and 12K miles since conversion, and it's still just as tight as the day I bought it (before conversion).
As for delivery time, he quoted me 4-6 weeks, and it actually took 4.
Jonstr,
Did you ship you car back and forth or did you make the drive.
If you shipped your baby do you mind saying approximately how much the shipping cost? I would assume the cost wouldn't be much more from Northern California.
Targa is the way the Z should have come from BG, and lack of it is the only thing that makes me hesitate to get one. I just LOVE this feature on my Coupe. I also LOVE the look of the Z06.

Thanks for the insight,
John
Yes, I shipped it up there and back. The cost was $1300 each way. That was only slightly higher than what it cost me to ship cars down to Phoenix when I moved here from Chicago, so I figured it was in the ball park. I used a company called Pace Transport (905-796-8200) out of Ontario. They run standard semis, not car haulers - which I was a little worried about - but they took great care of the car.
I elected to go with them because a) they were recommended by John Caravaggio, b) the price was quite a bit less than the big-name car haulers (I checked Peterson and Passport, but don't recall their quotes), and c) they go across the border frequently, and I didn't want any paperwork snags since I shipped my car up there not too long after 9/11 and was sure the customs inspectors were being super-cautious. You could probably do better with a little shopping around, but I didn't want to take a chance.
Here's the copy (along with the price) from their site:
Designed to have a OEM appearance this conversion uses several original parts allowing a weather tight seal. The targa top can be either with a clear top or with a painted one to match the exterior color. Each conversion takes 3 weeks from start to finish.
Price: $6,495.00 U.S
I guess instead you could _start_ with a Coupe, but by the time you had upgraded the overall performance to Z06 levels, you'd be at *least* to $7K!
The Targa FRC (isn't that a conflict in terminology now? :D) would be very unique.
