A lot of good information here regarding Lead Acid Batteries. It is at times a bit technical, but breaks down the differences in conventional batteries, maintenance free batteries (VRLA), AGM - Absorbed Glass Mat batteries and Gel Cell batteries.
Also, CAR AND DEEP CYCLE BATTERY FAQ 2016 a site maintained and updated by Bill Darden that answers just about any question you might have regarding batteries including who actually manufactures a particular battery you may be interested in buying.
I also run a Sears DieHard Platinum group 78 paid around $200. They don't make the platinum but they still have diehard gold in the proper size and it's in the price range you were looking for $135 around here.
I've run Sears DieHard batteries in both my vettes and never had any issues.
I've had two red tops die in 12 months. They are definitely not worth the money or hassle. The yellow top seems to last longer but I wouldn't call any Optima battery "high quality".

If I had 2 red tops "die" on me within 12 months I would not be a happy camper either. Makes me wonder if it was just extremely bad luck or something else was going on to cause the failures. In my case the red top was in the car when I bought it 6 years ago and the only time if has failed me was during a dormant period where the car was not started for a couple of months. Even now I think the battery would be perfectly fine if I used the car as a daily driver. Moved to the yellow top for its 120 RC rating. All the red tops I have seen have had a 100 RC rating.
I'm assuming that Optima is like any other product, sometimes some bad product slips through.
Yeah, but I suspect I will go with the $134 from K-Mart when the time comes.
While I have had no problems at all with the Platinum, including parking the car for a number of weeks when we had a bad winter a couple years back, I doubt the Odyssey will last twice as long as the Diehard AGM. Which it would almost have to to justify the price.

So I'm replacing my AC Delco this week. Should I go with gel battery...AGM...what is a good option? I just want something that won't potentially leak!! Also, I read somewhere that I may need an adapter or harness (along those lines) if changing to a AGM or gel based. Is that true or does it just plug right in with no additional equipment needed?

No adapters needed. Corvette's have side terminal battery cables so as long as the battery you purchase have side terminal connections you are good to go.
I have the AutoCraft Platinum AGM Battery. Around $179 less 30% off with their current coupon code. Just search for Avance Auto dicount codes. Right now there is 30% off or $40 off over $100.
i am a PESSIMIST and now you folks have me wondering about our batteries . had the 2004 about 3 years and know nothing about its battery and had the 2000 10 years and never done anything with battery . the 2000 has a red top on battery and haven't a clue what 2004 battery looks like . . . peace
You could put 1,000,000 miles on a C5 with lead acid batteries and never have a leak. You could walk out to the garage tomorrow and have a real mess on your hands. If the lead acid battery that was in my truck for 3 years had been in my FRC I would have been sick. It leaked and ran all over the place. Odd's are in your favor (especially with one of them being a red top) I'm just not a gambler.

Go AGM. They come in standard sizes. C5's came with either a size 78 or 75 depending on year.

I used the Sears DieHard Platinum when I needed a battery about six years ago now. I use a battery maintainer on it in the winter months and have not had a problem to date...
