Do it all the time, gives more control.... I actually do a lot of manual shifting! Good fun, up and down.. Best of both worlds.. Once you get used to it,it's great .
I believe it's an electronic signal your sending anyway, so not crunching gears
I often manually shift my A4 to just hold on the revs longer.
However I do avoid going from 4th to 2nd, instead I'll anticipate when I'll need 2nd and shift down to 3rd first. That or just stay in third when I'm in city traffic.
I kinda have a heavy foot and average 18-19 mpg.
