They had to "fuel them up" and get them off the ground ASAP. After a bit of flying, the heat generated by the fast moving air over the surface of the plane, caused the metal to expand and "seal up". Kind of surprised, though, that they didn't have some sort of "rubber bladders" inside the wings, but I'm pretty sure there must have been a good reason....

Because Rubber bladders could not handle the 500F heat the titanium surfaces would see. They would only fuel them up partially with a separate start up cold mix . They would get airborne, do a couple of burnouts.. Mach 3.5, to get the surfaces heat soaked , then they will meet the Tanker , take on a full load with a different Hot mix ( operational long range mix ), in the air, but not at Mach 3.5. Faster than any SAM, or AAM...they could simple walk away from any threat, with a nudge to the throttles. This was 1950's technology, all Analog. The titanium was so brittle, it would shatter with a single hammer strike.

I have used M1, M1 High Mileage, and Pennzoil Platinum. All 5w30.

I like M1 High Mileage the best.

That would be a question I would ask my Chevy dealer...

Me too. 2001 MT vert.
But I have that stupid oil ring issue. Have to add a quart about every 1,500 miles.

On a previous LS1 I thought I had piston slap but it was cam lifter noise when started and especially when the oil got hot.
I swore it was piston slap, but it wasn't.

Switched from Mobil to Castrol Syntec (same 5-30) and the noise was almost completely gone. I've been using Castrol ever since on all my cars.

Truth be told, they're PROBABLY buying the oil in "bulk", meaning 55 gallon drums, and are getting whatever is the current "Dexos compliant" oil......and if it is, it's "SN" compliant oil, NOT the "SJ" or "SL" oil that was spec'd for our C-5s.

So you should only use "SJ" or "SL" oil for C5s? Will it say "SJ" or "SL" on the bottle?

What is "SJ", "SL", and "SN"? Never heard of any of this.

I feel quite certain they're buying their oil in bulk. Most, if not all, dealerships do. Will the more-advanced oil do harm?

It will most likely have a lower amount of ZDDP, which is an additive that helps fight wear at the cam/lifter interface, which is a point of high friction, even with roller lifters.

The most recent reason for reducing the ZDDP, is to increase the life of catalytic converters, rather than the life of the engine......

I wonder if I should furnish my own oil when I go in for a change.

How about a set of ramps, a drain pan, 13MM box end wrench, and the appropriate oil filter wrench?

That would be the best way, but after fracturing five vertebrae and being put back together with titanium, super glue and some duct tape, I think I'd better pass on that one!

Every time I think I have problems .... well, the problems I have are pretty small compared to a lot of people.
A good reminder to count your blessings.

You have to start him up with water first, and then warm him with a Mach 3.5 run before you can pour a beer into him.

Sorry, all the SR-71 banter earlier in the thread got my imagination going.

OK, I understand. Maybe a local shop, or gas station (if your area still has them), with a lift that's low enough to get a Corvette on, and yeah, bring your own oil, and a 1st quality filter, and "slip them a 20" to change your oil.....
