Whats going on fellas. Is there a way I can get to the starter from the engine bay? It's shot so I'm trying to tap it so I can start the car and get it to the shop. Thanks in advance.
Tow it!
Not C5 owner, but two friends had there replaced, my recommendation is to find someone local, cousin paid dealership $1,200.00 for replacement. Another friend used my friend for $400.00, and he bought starter at parts store, along with sensor.
I don't know how old your car is or milage, but there is sensor behind the starter they recommend to replace while the starter is out, sorry don't remember the name but others here would know it.

Can you find one of those "mobile mechanic" guys to come to you? It is not a very big job (for someone who has done it before). The important thing is to make sure all the wiring gets tucked away from the exhaust.

Get a broom handle and stick it down between or beside exhaust manifold. Give the solenoid a few taps or hits because that's more than likely the problem area. It did nothing to hit the starter. It worked for me and I was able to drive to get it replaced. If you have headers it would help to buy a wrap for the new starter and solenoid for heat protection. JMHO
The Bosch starter on Amazon is excellent and a good price.

Here is what I used on my race car. First starter only lasted one season. The second was still going strong after 5. Heatshield Products (don't remember the part number)

They should come with one of those already installed, very nice and desireable product.
if it's a 6 speed car you can push start it if nothing else works
Mine went at work so got a push start to get home. Changed it in the driveway on jackstands with a starter from a local parts place. It was a tight fit but that was six years ago and still good.
