I went out to the garage the other day (unheated in Iowa) and discovered the targa top on my 1999 Corvette developed a 6 inch long crack on the driver's side near the front. The crack is through the top not just crazing in the coating. I have ordered a replacement from Melrose T-top but would like to know if this is common and if there is anything I need to do to prevent it in the future

Hi Robins I'm over in Cedar Rapids and I have the glass top on my car right now I guess I better go look to see if mine is cracked. That sucks those are not cheap. Do you think it cracked by the cold temperature?

I think over time the top does degrade to the point where the lexan gets brittle - I have heard of a number of tops that develop small cracks in the surface. Sometimes, those cracks do develop into more serious cracks that basically ruin the top. Temperatures can play a part in the process I suppose since there have been instances of back windows in cars shattering.

My C4 had a split almost dead center that grew to about 6" in a year. Once the wet season started, I drilled a small hole at the end of the crack, then filled it with a special epoxy for polycarbonate and it was good to go until I put my head through it.
