What is the motor rated at? Is this more hype or do you have a good source?

edv2122,
480HP 475LB in a 3300 pound vette
i have every reason to think it is true for what i think is a good source
sad part is that that leaves the 405HP LS6 for the other vettes i wanted to see the 6.6L in all vettes with a turbo or a sc on it for the ZO6

Hmmm now if your sources are correct it will be a tough decision to either 1- buy a 04 Z06 right away or 2- wait to see what the C6 has to offer. Of course I wouldnt by a first year C6 so I guess if they didnt look promising I could get the 04 used. Fun decisions!

Go to: http://www.GMinside news.com for all the imfo. New motors will have NO camshafts. They will have electronic valves...kinda sorta the way fuel injection went. :D

rookie,
this is how i see it. but hey who asked me? look at it like this, the 2004 c5 zo6 will have the 6.6L and this is why. GM has filled half of the plant with cadillac stuff. we know the c6 will be her in 2004 as a 2005. therefore, gm will make very few 2004 zo6s put the bigger motor in them and charge more. the dealers get their markup because so few are made with the new motor. gm can start removing hardtop stuff from the plant before they stop making the c5 and start putting up the c6 line. this way the down time is less between the c5 and c6, gm gets to make a little more off the hardtop before they close it out, the dealer gets to make as much as they want for the zo6, and those lucky enough to get one will have a true collectable.

the mustang is right on the butt of the regular vette so you put the ls6 or ls2 whatever they want to call it as long as it has over 400hp in the regular vette so if the wife wants to smack down a good driver in a stang she can (not that my wife is a bad driver). The zo6 would be on a viper like a honey badger on a snake.
WIN GM WIN Dealer WIN US

While it would be an interesting concept, I don't buy it for a minute. They would have to do so many driveline improvements to the current Z06 drivetrain there is no way they will do this on the last year of production IMHO.

Even from 01 to 02, they had increase clutch clamping force by 7% because some units failed during testing due to a 15 ft-lb increase in torque from 01!

They would have to redesign the M12, the rear end and the clutch, not to mention half shafts and drive shaft just to accomodate the extra power on a car still covered by the manufacturer warranty. Not to mention the effect from a CAFE and gas guzzler tax perspective.

IMHO, we will see either no improvement in power for 04 or maybe 425 hp achieved with slightly more breathing on the current LS6. Based on my dyno chart, they would not need to increase torque to achieve this, just slightly improve breathing from 5500-6500 rpm.

bertrand,
you have the car i almost got but the wife said i need a tahoe more.

gm has had this setup in the in the SST Silverado for years. it has a modified vette drive train and they have thousands of test miles on it. this i know first hand

Thanks for the comment about the car...I'm sure a Tahoe would come in handy though.

It would be cool to have a 6.6 liter vette from the factory but there is a big difference between thousands of test miles on a test rig and a comfort level that they can warranty the thing on real cars that will be subjected to 'corvette driving' on a regular basis. Let's wait and see...

Isn't it rumored that the C6 will be camless? Therefore it would not use the LS1 engine?

son93sl2,
glad you brought that up, here is my scoop on that.
about two years ago the c6 was going to come out in 2004 and the zo6 was going to come back in 2006 as an option in both the cp and vert. the c6 was pushed back a year and therefore i bet the zo6 was also pushed back to 2007 or about the time the camless motor will be ready. this will make the 2004 zo6 c5 a very collectable car.
the c5 is out of here so there is no need for them to keep the hardtop. gm would have lost money on the racer that everybody said they wanted but few bought. the zo6 saved them on that one. If I could I would buy a 2004 eb zo6 with the 6.6L and send it to LPE the day I get it for their SC but the wife is making me wait until 2007 or 2008 for the return of the zo6 or whatever they call it.

It seems unlikely to me that they would put a power increase of 75hp in the supposed last production year of a model.

The C5 has has 345/350hp for 7 years or so. The 01 Z06 increase 35hp, 02/03 increase of 20 hp and maybe 0 for 04.

Similarly the Camaro Z28 from 93 had 275, then 285 in 96 and finally 305 in 02 (or something close) almost 10 years later.

Cool if it happened, but I would doubt it.

Paul.

The Magnuson Supercharger is nowhere big enough (lacks in CFM) to push a 6.6 liter motor.

3300 is also wrong for coupes and verts.

Let's just humor ourselves to think that they will put a 6.6L engine in the Vette. How much is all this gonna cost us between GM price increase and dealer markup? If it costs $80k they can keep it.

Howdy Folks -

I suspect, if anything, GM will do another incremental upgrade, in the 420-425 range, sticking with the LS6. We know there's a little corked up power in the LS6, so finding another 12-15rwhp, and letting the '04 badge proudly read "425HP" would do it. Plus it would keep the same basic package and parts - they certainly don't want too many MY variations.

I would think GM would want the new C6 to exceed the coupe/vert power, but fall just under the current top-of-the-line performance model (say 385-400), then they can bump the power in the next year or two following release, _and_ have a performance model with the 10-15% increase the Z06 has over the coupe/verts.

So we have the (later) C5 at 350, the Z06 at 405-420(02 to possible 04's), the C6 in the 385-400 range (which may be close to Z06 performance if they significantly shave some weight). Then within a year or two, the C6 derived "Z06" in the 450-475HP range, with another 10-15 HP bump for all the C6 variations within a year or two after that (putting coupes in the 395-415HP range, and the "Z06" pushing the 500HP envelope at 480+).

Just my completely uninformed $0.02 :D More driven from what I would do from a marketing standpoint. FWIW, I'm deck to get a Z06 very soon ('03 I would assume), *but* obviously, this is all very interesting news!!

Take care
