I made a $9K offer on this one, been for sale for a month. He'd only come down to $10K so he gets to keep it. The search continues.

I don't think 9Kis out of line. Looks like a very base model, no heads up, standard seats, manual a/c, etc. Keep on the hunt. Lots of cars out there.

Don't know what your budget is. There isn't a lot of photos with the ad but judging just from the supplied photos looks to be pretty clean. If it has good service records, is accident free, and can pass a tech inspection, I would think its a very good price for a 6m in a good color. Remember that good maintenance and care will almost always trump mileage. Good luck on your hunt.

To me it actually looks pretty good and is priced reasonably.

He states like new tires too as a plus. It also looks like it has a short shifter.

The C5's can go a lot of miles, so I wouldn't worry about the mileage.

Good luck with your search.

Yea, I don't think he's too far out of line, I'm just trying to catch a deal. It's not like I'm desperate. And the car is 2 states over, about 130 miles so I haven't actually laid eyes on it. Said the ABS/TC light stays on and that's a common issue with them.

Is the short throw shifter an option or aftermarket?

Short throw shifters are aftermarket. That may be just a new shift ball swapped onto the stock shifter. It's difficult to tell from the pictures.

Looks like a nice stock unmolested car... very rare to find a clean unmolested C5. If it was me, I would counter with the split difference.. you are at 9 he is at ten.. 9500 would be a good deal for you. Since this is an unmolested car.

Bill aka Et

Edit, I would pass because of the ABS/ Traction issue. did not see that in the original topic line.

The ABS/TC light might not be fixable. The EBCM in the cars up to 2000 can not be fixed and replacements are not available. If you haven't, search some threads on here for details. Car will drive fine, will just be old school with no ABS/TC.

On one hand, a few weeks from now the seller might find himself wishing he'd taken the nine-grand offer. On the other, if his car sells and all you're finding is lesser cars (lots of turds in this world) for the same money you might just be wishing you'd paid him the ten grand.

I'd at least consider getting get him on the phone and walking him through the process of pulling the ECBM codes. I'd agree in advance that if the code is one that offers at least some hope of repair I'd be willing to stretch to $9,750 (or some semi-arbitrary number) if in return he'd agree to sell it for $9,000 should the code be one of those that indicates the unit is definitely kaput.

Considering the EBCM for the early cars is a solid $800-1,000 to replace, and the owner said he'd take $10,000, taking $9,000 basically breaks him even.

I would think anyone who does any research on these cars will see that the EBCM code means $1,000 to fix, assuming you want to fix it.

If there was nothing wrong with the car, $10K would be a reasonable price. With the TC/ABS light on, not so good a deal. There are plenty of C5s out there for sale - might want to look a bit more even if it means a further distance from you.

Heck, there is two on eBay right now and they want about $1600 for a used one. There is also a listing to repair 98-00 ebcms but I was thinking they could not be repaired, only 01-04 could be.....interesting.

It is a good deal, from a dealers perspective, it would bring very close to $9500 at the wholesale auction and retail for 2500 more if it is reasonable nice with no issues and the stated newer tires..

EDIT: I missed the part about the abs and tc light being on, sure rather have one with out that issue. Still a decent deal for sure.

Friou back, missed the tc/abs thing last go around. I don't believe in buying cars with unaddressed issues. If he won't/doesn't get it repaired, look elsewhere. Don't buy one of these cars with unrepaired issues, just my personal opinion, others may disagree. Take care!

I'm sure he will be just fine. Good luck finding one that ruffles your feathers, don't settle because of a good deal, but don't be such a jerk that you lose out on a great car over 1k.

I was considering ponying up the extra dough before the EBCM issue was brought to my attention. I read up on a lot of post about it, looked at used units on feebay, saw the place that claims to repair the earlier ones, heard from the people that have put 250K on their 97s with no issues and still running strong, heard from the people that say run from the car like your *** is on fire, and I appreciate every opinion.

The car is nice and was one of the better deals I've seen in my searching, that's why I made an offer, originally 8 then up to 9. The one thing I am sure of is I want the ABS to work with the idiot vehicle operators (not drivers) around here, and it rains a lot.

Thanks to everybody for their input, at least I know more now than before I started the post.
