Had to get the car inspected today
The guy comes back in after awhile and says "she passed with flying colors, but... the window tint won't pass.
Here it has to be 35, I have 15 (never had a problem)
The guy says a couple of weeks ago he passed a car and as soon as the guy left a cop pulled him over for tint. The inspection station was fined 3000 dollars and the next one would be 7.
So this afternoon I had it removed (Only charged me 20 bucks). I ask the guy that removed it if after I passed the inspection could he return it to the way it was, he said he could put what ever I wanted on it but it would be cash/ no recite. I is kinda' cool being able to see out after dark but just don't look right.
Have any of you guys been tagged for window tint?
I haven't had any tickets for tinted windows in either of my Corvettes. I've had dark tint on the first one and have dark tint on the current one. Been driving the Corvettes since 2010 and so far no problems.
But, in other cars I've owned over the years, I've been pulled over for tinted windows 6 times and got tickets 5 of those 6 times.
But the last cop that got me for tinted windows gave me a ticket for no seatbelt, instead, because it was a cheaper ticket (even though I was wearing my seatbelt.) So, technically 4 tinted window tickets.
I guess 1993 was my banner year. I was pulled over 4 times for tinted windows and got 3 of those tickets that year.

I've always tinted my front side windows at the state maximum level (35%) as I don't want to run into the problem you just did. Can't say I blame the inspection shop for not wanting to pass the car after getting fined.
I got pulled over in my Cavalier for a tint violation. $125, if I recall. Haven't had tint since. I want it on the Corvette, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle.
No cop wants to walk up to a car where he can not see who or what is waiting for him on the other side of that dark window. Since the law is written, it becomes a sore spot for many cops, and an opportunity to enforce the law. I don't blame him either. As a civilian, I don't like to see it either. Dark tint at dusk is also a very dangerous condition.
I can not blame an inspection shop for protecting their license.
Just my opinion on the law, and the reason why it is written.
I have 35% on sides and 25% on back (in Texas) - at one point I had 5% on the rear and I nearly piled the car up in reverse one night (could not see anything) and had it swapped out.
They started checking the tint last year at inspection time on me and lately the police have been hiding in underpasses around here to catch people.
I agree, I would not want to pull someone over where I could see inside. I am surprised they allow any opacity on the rear window in Texas.
CHOYT is right they just started in NY this year. Got a ticket with my tacoma 2 years ago on throgs neck bridge it was 100 dollar fine no points it was an equipment violation.
Vette is stock here, so never an issue. Camaro however is a different story. Camaro is 5% out back, 35% on the sides. Law is 70% on the sides, back is free game here in the democrapic peoples republic of new yorkistan. As others have mentioned, it's a copy safety thing. I chose appearance, and have always just dealt with the equipment violations since there were no points. That along with no front plate the car usually attacts cops like flies to crap. I usually get 1-2 tickets per season. I plan on 175$ / season on a stupid ticket.
As others have stated, they now made the equip checks part of our inspections. However, I've been told they're grandfathering anything older than 92 - which luckily my camaro slides under. I heard not only though did they make it an issue for inspection places, but banned (and knowing this state will fine) tint installers for installing anything too dark as well.

Why don't you leave the windows down when you take it in? Would they actually put them up to inspect?
I had my windows down when I went in but because they had been fined he was checking (lucky me)
I'll just pay cash and have them retinted and go through the dance again next year.
In Pa they took it out of the hands of the inspectors and left it to the police. No matter what the %, if they can't see in in their opinion they will fine and have you remove the tint.

In Pa, there is a safety inspection, and a mechanical inspection and in areas so designated an emission inspection.
A Pa State Inspection station can refuse to give a certioficate of compliance for anything they feel is a safety issue. Also window tint is still part of the safety inspection in Pa.
PA Motor Vehicle State Inspection Code

(e) Sun screening and other materials prohibited.
(1) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sun screening device or other material which does not permit a person to see or view the inside of the vehicle through the windshield, side wing or side window of the vehicle.
I never get pulled over for tinted windows in the Vettes but I can't count how many tinted window tickets I've gotten in my Eagle Talon TsiAWD since 1991. I don't think I'd be lying if I say I've probably spent over a $1,000 on tickets but I refuse to comply by the stupid Iowa law.
