The shift light is not made up, it is a feature on the manual tranny cars. Page 3-17 in the Owner's Manual (at least in the 2003 manual) states the following:
Shift Light (Performance SHIFT Light)
This light is used for performance driving to indicate that the vehicle’s best performance level has been reached to shift the transmission into the next higher gear. The SHIFT light will display at an engine speed of about 5,750 rpm (6,250 rpm on Z06), just prior to reaching the engine fuel cut-off mode.
It has been a long time since I have had a manual tranny C5 (sold mine in 2008), but I have seen the light appear in the HUD on that car and I do not think I had to be in competition mode.
Here's what the manual says about the Competitive Driving Mode:
Competitive Driving Mode
The driver can select this optional handling mode by pressing the ACTIVE HANDLING button on the console for more than five seconds. Competitive Driving mode allows the driver to have full control of the rear wheels while the Active Handling System helps steer the vehicle by selective brake application. The instrument cluster light will not be on. The Traction Control System will not be operating. Adjust your driving accordingly.
When you press the ACTIVE HANDLING button again, or turn the ignition to ACC, the Active Handling and Traction Control Systems will be on. The TRAC/ACT HNDLG-ON message will be displayed temporarily in the DIC and a chime will be heard.
I have a 03 Z06.....There is a "light" in the HUD that comes on and says shift. It is the same color as the rest of the HUD and doesn't really stand out. I would like to get a regular shift light but haven't decided what to get and where to mount it....

I put it on the side pillar ,it was easy to install and if not looking for it very not noticeable I love it .. If want I can send pic..
The factory "SHIFT" light is a small message that appears in the HUD when at high rpms.
The original video you posted shows the "1-4 SHIFT" light being used to indicate a shift - this feature can be programmed using HPTuners, to come on at any RPM you wish.

I have a raptor shift light and its mounted to the bottom of my Rear View mirror. it is a good place keeps it out of the way. It is bright when it goes off and you can see it well.
I dropped the wires down the A-pillar and was mounted there then the wires went under the dash .The Raptor has how to wire and were to wire ,I have a good friend master auto Electron he did the wiring .I'll see if I can find him he is on the Forman then you can contact him ..From what I seen it was not that big of a deal we both looked at the how to wire deal Strat forward .. .
If you don't mind I would love to see a pic of how/where it is mounted....Thanks
Here is a pic that shows where I mounted mine. Ran the wires down the A pillar and used the double sided tape to mount the semi circle clips that hold the Raptor.
