Default Show me your shifters.......

I trully HATE the stock shifter in my 01' Z. Way too high and wide. I want to shorten the shaft and put an aftermarket **** on. If anyone has a pic, please post it. Include where you bought it too. Thanks!

Steve, I think you're much better off doing a search on this topic. There are millions of polls and whatnot about this topic. :yesnod:

I did a seach and looked at 30+ posts. Not ONE photo of one in the car. So, please post some pics.

Question, Is this trans the same as the viper's? I have a Viper as well and just shortened the length of the shaft and replaced the ****. I want to do this with my Z.........

GaryZ06..... The height I'm looking for..... Does the Hurst bring it to that level? Do you then just screw on the stock ****?

BTW, I like the emblem touch on the ash tray cover........

Yes the Hurst drops it to that height(2 inches shorter).Yes just screw the stock shifter on but you will have to take out the pin so you can even remove the ****.

NOW, Does anyone make a shorter shaft replacement instead of going with the hurst?
Steve -- Not really. BUT, you have a couple options in terms of stock ease-of use in a shorter application.

Corvette Concepts takes a stock shifter and lops half the threads off of it, giving you a stock shifter (despite what you may read/hear) that's shorter. Problem is that you still have the fat, insulated shaft below the threads, which makes screwing down some ***** (as far as they're supposed to go) impossible (and also stretches the top of the boot opening).

Mallett uses the BASE of the stock shifter, but uses its own billet, uninsulated shifter shaft that's 1-1/2" shorter than stock. It's rumored to be more precise than the stock shifter 'cause the sloppy insulated feel of the stock shifter has been removed -- but the shifter leverage point has not been altered, and so it should shift with the EASE of the stock shifter.

All the other aftermarket shifters raise the leverage geometry (physically), making them more difficult to shift. They're MUCH more precise, and the throws are much shorter -- they're just tougher to actuate. Some people love this, and others hate it. Me, I'm in between right now. The stock unit is absolute crap, IMO, so I'm not going back to it. I'm just growing a bit tired of muscling the Ripper...

I'll have to look at it closely to see if I can just put a shorter shaft on it. If it's exactly like the Viper, I'll have no problems. It's a custom piece a guy out here makes for all of the Viper owners. All you do is break the stock one off (rubber cone), put the new shaft on (2 diff. sizes) a nut and jam it.......
